Serena’s hand paused as she wiped Dylan’s forehead. She was so close, she could feel the feverish heat coming off him.
She shook her head. After three years, she knew him better than anyone.
She had to stay by Dylan’s side all night, hoping he’d be feeling better by the early morning.
“Stella, I’m sorry! Please don’t go, don’t leave me… The one I love is you… Stella, I can’t lose you…” Dylan kept mumbling.
Dylan kept rambling on, his voice low and persistent.
Serena ignored him completely.
She let
go of him, thinking she could truly keep her heart calm. But Dylan’s words stirred up a painful ripple in her once peaceful heart.
‘What I do today, anyone, even a stranger, would’ve done the same, Serena thought.
She told herself that, tryin
to make herself feel better.
As she wiped him down, her gaze lingered on the long scar across his chest, a mark on what used to be his perfect body.
Serena thought, ‘If he hadn’t gotten help in time after that car crash, he wouldn’t have survived!
Back then, Serena was investigating Dylan and knew Rowan was after his company. Even though Serena had people keeping an eye on Rowan, he still couldn’t avoid disaster.
She regretted it so much. Every time she saw that scar, she kept thinking, ‘If I’d just sent a couple more people to watch over Dylan, maybe that accident never would’ve happened.
‘Maybe neither of us would’ve had to suffer so much, and all those misunderstandings wouldn’t have come between us.
‘But there is no such thing as “what if” in this world.
‘Even after everything I’d done, Dylan still didn’t seem moved at all.
‘I had seen Dylan go all out for Eliana.
‘But when it came to me, the one who cared about him wholeheartedly, he only ever showed me his coldest side.
‘He worked so hard to build up the company, all just so he could bring Eliana back one day and let her live a good life.
‘But with me, he always kept his distance, cold, detached, never letting me in!
Serena gave a wry, helpless chuckle. She just couldn’t figure out how things between them had gotten so complicated.
She thought, ‘It was such a beautiful beginning.’
All night, Dylan kept calling out for Stella, over and over.
Serena stayed by his side, making sure his lips never dried out the whole night.
It was only after his fever broke in the early morning that Serena dragged the sofa bed from the living room, set it up right next to Dylan, pulled a blanket over herself, and finally allowed herself to sleep.

Chapter 393
When Dylan opened his eyes again, it was already noon the next day.
He looked around at the unfamiliar room and wondered, ‘Where am I?
‘What happened to me?‘
His whole body ached, and his head felt heavy and dizzy.
Dylan sat up and looked out the window. It was still snowing.
He lowered his gaze and saw Serena sleeping on the sofa bed right next to him.
Dylan’s eyes trembled with excitement, his heart racing. He thought, ‘Is that really her? Am I dreaming?
‘It’s Stella!‘
Dylan pinched his cheek, just to make sure he wasn’t dreaming, and the sting told him it was real.
“Stella…” he rasped, his voice rough and barely above a whisper.
Serena woke up suddenly at the sound of his voice.

She sat up in a rush, but when she saw that Dylan was awake, she eased herself back down. “Dylan, I’m still really tired. I need a bit more sleep. If you’re feeling better, you can head home.”
Her health wasn’t great, and missing sleep always left her feeling miserable.
“Stell
hut her eyes, not bothering to see Dylan’s reaction.
