Spencer knew she didn’t want to face the issue directly and sighed quietly in his heart. “The restaurant is under Cloudmere Estate. I have a meeting to attend. We’ll leave in an hour.”

His voice was gentle and pleasant, lacking his usual sharp edge.

That year, he had lost himself in her world; whenever it involved her, his thoughts became chaotic.

But now Spencer understood, it wasn’t yet time to hold her hand and face the journey together.

Over the years, Spencer had watched her get hurt time and again.

He really despised Dylan.

He lowered his voice softly. “Stella, once you finish this movie, I’ll be out. Time flies when you watch a film, doesn’t it?”

Stella didn’t notice his tender tone but smiled gratefully. “Thank you. You go ahead and take care of your things. I’ll watch here and wait for you.”

“It’s nothing. We’re friends,” Spencer said with a warm smile, utterly gentle.

‘How can I be content with just being friends? If we were far apart, maybe I wouldn’t feel this strongly. But seeing her every day, I really want to be with her.

‘Stella, in the ninety–nine steps I take toward you lies all my love and courage, Spencer thought.

Stella looked up and caught the softness in his eyes.

Their gazes locked, and Serena’s heart trembled sharply.

Fearing she might notice something, Spencer quickly dropped his eyes.

He gave a bitter smile, a grown man’s crush, hidden carefully.

He guarded his secret feelings cautiously, trying to control himself, afraid that if she found out, she’d run to a place he couldn’t reach.

Spencer didn’t even dare to meet her eyes, simply and gently, afraid she would uncover his secret.

Spencer left, but Serena’s heart felt unsettled.

‘Did I misread things?‘ Serena wondered.

She didn’t dwell on it. Now, she had hidden all her love for Dylan away.

Her love was like a rose that withered in midsummer, never to bloom again.

Serena didn’t watch the movie but asked Chris to send her Eliana’s medical records from back then.

By now, Caleb’s side should have pinpointed when Eliana fell ill.

But they still hadn’t found the man who went abroad with Eliana back then.

‘If he’s not overseas, where could he be?‘ Serena pondered.

She messaged Chris, who quickly replied.

Chris: [Ms. Hale, wait three more days. Caleb’s team should have all the medical records by then.]

Serena: [Okay.]

‘Then I can only wait three more days,‘ Serena thought.

She glanced around Spencer’s office, simple gray and white tones, an overall stable, comfortable, sophisticated gray palette giving the space a businesslike atmosphere.

Next to the desk was a huge floor–to–ceiling window, lending a sense of calm depth and an upscale vibe.

Spencer definitely had good taste.

Serena surveyed the surroundings briefly, then looked back down at the movie.
