Vivian!Serena answered, her voice instantly bright with genuine joy.

Holy crap, Serena, I finally got through to you!Vivian Quinn’s lively voice exploded through the speaker. Your grandpa said you went off to face your trials. You were gone for four years. Where did you put me in all that time? Not a single call!

A bitter smile touched Serena’s lips. Indeed, the past four years had been her trial. A trial she had failed, returning scarred and broken.

She said apologetically, I’m sorry, Vivian. Some things happened these past few years. I couldn’t reach out. But it’s settled now. I’m back.

Vivian was her only true friend, one of the few who knew her real identity. Serena’s status was special, known to very few.

Likewise, Vivian’s own background was largely unknown to the outside world.

Alright, alright, I’m not really mad at you,Vivian said, her tone softening. While you were facing your trials, I got sent off on mine.

My grandpa shipped me overseas. Just got back not long ago myself.

We have to meet up tomorrow. Our two old geezers have run off abroad on vacation together.

Serena chuckled. So that was it. Edwin had found a travel buddy. Sounds perfect. Let’s meet tomorrow.

After making plans with Vivian, Serena went down for dinner.

Later, she took a walk in the estate gardens. Gazing at the distant city skyline, a vast, desolate emptiness filled her heart.

She had left decisively, but the pain remained. Well, guess what was never meant to be yours can never be forced.’

After a short while, she returned inside to sleep.

That night, her dreams were filled with the sound of a child’s crying.

Serena woke the next morning with tear stains still on her cheeks. My precious onewhy did you have to leave so soon after coming into this world?

For a moment, she lay still in her familiar room, her gaze vacant, eyes rimmed red as they stared blankly at the surroundings. A thick, suffocating wave of grief enveloped her.

Serena kept thinking, Why? My baby was so healthy. How could he be gone the moment he was born? If Dylan had just gotten me to the hospital soonerwould her child still be alive?

A sob escaped her lips, the sound part bitter laugh, part cry. The shattered light in her eyes was heartbreaking.

Dylan had never had any heart for her. His love had always belonged solely to Eliana. He probably hadn’t wanted Serena’s child to live either. It was her own foolish hope in him that had killed her baby.

Serena lay there and wept for a long time before finally rising to wash up.

After lunch, she headed to the upscale lounge where she had arranged to meet Vivian.

Having not seen Vivian for years, Serena brought a gift for her friend.

But upon entering the opulent, gilded lobby, she ran into Eliana.

Eliana had a delicate, gentle beautyround eyes, a slightly flatter nose bridgea look that was nonthreatening.

Serena, in contrast, was dazzlingly beautiful, striking at first glance, breathtaking upon the second.

Eliana burned with jealousy at the sight of that face. She kept convincing herself that if not for the creditof donating part of her liver to Dylan, Dylan probably wouldn’t have given Stella a second glance.

To keep that secret buried, to ensure Dylan never learned the truth of what happened back then, Eliana firmly believed Stella could not be allowed to live.

Remembering the hospital incident, Eliana seethed with hatred. Since when did Stella become so formidable?

Oh, Stella! Are you here looking for Dylan?Eliana asked, her voice sweet. He’s in a meeting upstairs. I just brought him lunch. I’m afraid he doesn’t have time to see you.A smug smile played on her lips.

Stella looked at her triumphant expression and returned a mocking smile. Eliana, Dylan isn’t here. There’s no need for the
