Serena set her work aside and walked to the floortoceiling windows. The roses in the garden were in full, beautiful bloom. She loved their vibrant, dewy petalsthorny, yet breathtakingly beautiful.

Waking up to the sight of roses was her favorite thing.

The entire villa had been decorated to her exact tastes.

The secondfloor balcony was a garden, planted with her favorite roses and peonies. The peonies were just beginning to bloom this month, their buds just starting to open.

They already stood with a regal grace, poised to command the garden.

The sight brought Serena’s mind back to the day she first met Dylan.

It was pouring rain. She had been cornered in an alley by her grandfather’s enemies and was just about to fight back when Dylan appeared.

He rode up on a bicycle, putting a stop to the whole thing. He was twentythree then, bright and handsome, with mischievous eyes that seemed to hold a thousand secrets.

His features were sharp and welldefined, and he wore a simple white tracksuit. In the misty rain, his youthful energy was veiled in an aura of mystery.

He propped up his bike with one long leg, his gaze sweeping over the men surrounding her with a cold, wicked glint.

Her younger, more naive self was completely captivated. He was like a hero straight out of a storybook, an avenging angel appearing out of nowhere.

She’d been on the run that day, exhausted after several fights. Dylan’s arrival had saved her life. And in that single encounter, she had fallen in love with the twentythreeyearold man.

She’d been clutching a bouquet of roses. After Dylan took down two of the men, he noticed how she was desperately shielding the flowers. A laugh escaped him, his lips curling into a lazy, sexy smile. Hey, are those roses more important than your life?

She hid the cold, sharp edge in her eyes and mumbled, I like roses.

He paused, looking at her as if she were a fool. Or maybe he just saw her as some random girl caught in the crossfire. Without a second glance, he turned and launched himself at the other two men.

He was young and full of raw power, his fighting style wild but brutally effective. In no time, he’d sent all four of them running.

She stayed pressed against the wall in the corner, clutching her roses. She didn’t even bother to wipe the rain from her face, her eyes fixed on his powerful, confident movements..

He walked slowly toward her, his long legs closing the distance. He leaned in, his head tilted as he studied her

face.

They were both a mess, soaked to the bone. Her face was bruised, and wet strands of hair were plastered to her skin, leaving only her large, captivating eyes visible as she watched him warily.

As he drew nearer, she could smell the unique, clean scent of him. He leaned in closer, so close she could see each of his thick eyelashes. For a heartstopping moment, she thought he was going to kiss her.

She tensed, her eyes fluttering shut. But then his voice, lazy and detached, drifted to her ear. You’re pretty banged up. You should get to a hospital.

His fingers gently brushed her cheek, and she heard his low, melodic voice again, this time laced with amusement. You’re a silly girl. Go home. It’s not safe out here.

When she opened her eyes, he was already gone, riding his bicycle away in a hurry.
