“Of course, Ms. Hale,” Chris said, his voice firm. “Don’t you worry. I’ll get right on it, and I’ll let you know the second I have any news.”
“Good,” Serena replied.
Eliana’s heart hammered in her chest. The moment she got home, she rushed to Beatrice’s room.
“Beatrice, it’s a disaster.”
Beatrice was in the middle of her skincare routine, and her expression soured at Eliana’s panicked tone.
Seeing the younger woman’s pale face, however, she felt a flicker of sympathy.
She set a diamond necklace down on her vanity and asked, “Eliana, what is it? What’s with all the panic? Did your father get into trouble again?”
The question sent a fresh wave of fear through Eliana.
She couldn’t control what Jasper did. Worst case, she could just do as Beatrice had suggested and cut ties with
the Lamberts.
With Dylan’s affection, Beatrice’s support, and little Liam, she could have a very happy life with the Ashfords.
“No, it’s not that,” Eliana stammered. “I ran into Stella tonight. She’s suspicious about how she lost the baby. Before she gave birth, Dylan apparently bought a bottle of lubricant. The day she slipped, she stepped on it, and that’s what sent her into premature labor. She’s blaming everything on Dylan now.
“The report against the bar was her doing,” she continued, her voice trembling. “She said she’s going to get revenge for her child and ruin the Ashford family. Beatrice, what do we do?”
Beatrice had orchestrated the whole thing years ago, and there were details even Eliana didn’t know.
After hearing Eliana’s frantic explanation, Beatrice showed no signs of alarm. Instead, she calmly considered her options.
She had sent Dylan away at the time, making it look like he had gone to find Eliana, precisely so he wouldn’t get suspicious.
If Stella was going to investigate, then fine. Beatrice would just have to point her in a different direction.
As long as the trail didn’t lead back to her.
After a long moment, a faint smile touched Beatrice’s lips. “Eliana, isn’t this for the best?” she said, her voice soothing.
“If Stella blames Dylan, there’s no chance they’ll ever get back together. You’ll be my daughter–in–law. You

know I’ve always been in your corner, paving the way for you. I always knew Stella was the one Dylan really loved, and he’s been living a lie this whole time.
“He’s stubborn and loyal to a fault, which is why he’s been so good to you. This is the perfect outcome.”
She met Eliana’s eyes in the mirror. “Once you walk out that door, you will forget everything you just told me. The only way to avoid suspicion is to remain calm.”
Her tone hardened. “The Ashford family isn’t made of glass, but your family has already cost us half our assets. Later, I’ll go with you to formally cut ties with the Lamberts. From now on, the Ashford family will not be involved in their affairs.”
Beatrice had already made up her mind.
Helping Jasper had been a massive financial drain. If it continued, the Ashfords would be ruined.
She had no desire to return to the poverty of her past, especially with Rowan circling like a vulture now that the company was vulnerable.
The future of the family was at stake.
“So, Eliana, are you willing to disown your family?” Beatrice pressed. “Your father is a greedy, bottomless pit. Dylan already spent a fortune on that plot of land, and if we can’t develop it, that money is just gone.
“The Ashfords will be left with nothing, just like years ago. I’ve always known that you ran off with that other man back then. So, you need to make a choice.”
Beatrice’s expression was grim. When Dylan had his car accident, Eliana had been afraid he’d be a burden, so she took off with another man. The memory still infuriated Beatrice.
But she couldn’t stand seeing Stella nurse Dylan back to health, watching him learn to walk again. So she and Eliana had conspired against him, tricking him into believing he had gotten Eliana pregnant.
That was the beginning of the plot against Stella.
The cold look on Beatrice’s face sent a chill down Eliana’s spine. She knew. She had known all along. But if she knew, why did she still help her?
Eliana couldn’t understand Beatrice at all.
Her brow furrowed, and it took her a long moment to find her voice. “Beatrice… how did you know about what happened back then?”
