Jasper Lambert eyed Beatrice’s threatening face, his calculating gaze narrowing. He knew when to fold. This was a battle, not the war.
His daughter was still his, after all. She wasn’t going anywhere.
‘That old witch Beatrice is completely shameless,‘ he fumed internally.
In Kingsbridge, Dylan Ashford wasn’t just from a wealthy family; he was the golden boy of the elite.
Marrying his daughter off to a man like that would have been a major feather in Jasper’s cap, but now that honor was slipping through his fingers.
But who knew what the future held?
“Fine. I’ll sign.”
Jasper took the pen and papers from Beatrice and briskly signed his name.
Beatrice let out a breath of relief. From now on, Eliana would have no legal connection to Jasper and his family.
“Eliana, let’s go.” Beatrice helped Eliana, who was kneeling on the floor, to her feet. She winced, seeing the red marks on Eliana’s knees.
Zoe Lambert, who had just reached the doorway, had seen everything. Her eyes narrowed when she saw the undisguised joy on Eliana’s face.
“Eliana, are you really leaving with Mrs. Ashford?”
Zoe watched her daughter, heartbroken. She hadn’t been mistaken; there was a genuine smile on Eliana’s face now that she was free from her family.
She was happy to cut ties with the Lamberts.
Eliana paused, looking at her mother. In this family, her mother was the only one who had ever truly loved her.
Her father and brother had only ever seen her as a tool to be used.
In her mother’s eyes, she was a princess.
“Mom, I’m sorry,” Eliana said, before quickly leaving with Beatrice.
The bag of groceries slipped from Zoe’s hand, spilling onto the floor. She sank down, tears streaming down.
her face.
The daughter she had raised with her own hands was now disowning her.

Once outside, Beatrice glanced back at Zoe crumpled on the floor. A triumphant smirk played on her lips. She was always the one pulling the strings, never the puppet.
‘Zoe Lambert,‘ she thought, ‘I really have you to thank for this.‘

Meanwhile, Serena received a text from Chris Maddox.
[Ms. Hale, Beatrice Ashford took Eliana to the Lamberts‘ house. She signed papers severing ties with her family.]
Serena stared at the message, taken aback. Why was Beatrice so fond of Eliana?
She had even used Stella to pave the way for her.
Stella thought hard but couldn’t pinpoint a single redeeming quality in Eliana.
‘Is it just because Dylan loves her?‘
A pang of hurt shot through Serena. She couldn’t wrap her head around Beatrice’s actions. It was as if Beatrice had considered Eliana her daughter from the very beginning.
Serena set aside her work, her mind consumed with the situation.
Beatrice’s devotion went far beyond a typical mother–in–law’s affection.
After helping the Lamberts out of their crisis by purchasing their land, Dylan began processing the necessary paperwork.
Three days later, Miles Carter walked into the office with a worried look on his face. “Mr. Ashford,” he said, “I heard back from the city. They confirmed the land purchase is legal, but the permit isn’t being approved yet. They told us to wait.”
A chill fell over Dylan’s handsome features. He needed to secure this land to free up capital for his upcoming collaboration with the Ellington family.
“Did they say why it’s being held up?” he asked.
Miles was baffled. His contact at the city was a familiar one who wouldn’t normally give him the runaround.
He went to the water cooler, poured a glass, and downed it in one go. “He didn’t say. But from the look on his face, it’s a serious roadblock. The weird thing is, I asked around, and no one else is even interested in that property.”
Dylan’s brow furrowed. He was at a loss, and a flicker of concern crossed his usually composed face.
