Chapter 65 Under His Control
Alicia felt a sudden chill press against her chest, and her mind involuntarily drifted back to that night when his hands had explored every inch of her with meticulous precision.
The flush that had just faded from her checks surged back, unbidden.
Austin started the car, his long fingers resting lightly on the steering wheel. That night, she had felt exactly like this vehicle-utterly under his control.
His voice broke through her reverie. “I’ve heard your mother’s story. She was formidable-left quite a mark in the business world.”
He mentioned her mother so suddenly that Alicia instinctively clutched the hem of her shirt.
“Do you think she was a little too domineering?”
Growing up, everyone in the Gibson family had called her mother cold and unyielding.
……….
But they forgot who had invested thirty million into the Gibson fortune, who had pulled the family back from the brink.
Her mother had poured every resource into lifting the Gibsons, working tirelessly until the family prospered. Once they benefited, they complained she had claimed too much power, failing to acknowledge her sacrifices.
After her mother passed away, her shares and assets were swiftly seized.
When the big shot dropped, everyone scrambled for a piece of the pie.
The second and third wives’ sides of the family jumped at the chance to claim everything they could, with Richard even appropriating her shares.
Everyone erased the good she had done. After her death, they smeared her name, linking her to scandalous love triangles, painting her as a failure. That injustice still stung Alicia deeply.
Austin’s low, deliberate voice cut through her thoughts. “If I had a capable wife, I’d consider myself really lucky.”
Alicia whipped her head toward him, but he kept his eyes fixed on the road.
“You really mean that?” she asked..
Even David, for all his wealth and influence, had treated Alicia like a pampered possession.
During those three years, he could have leveraged the Burton family’s connections to help her at any moment, yet he never did. Deep down, he believed women shouldn’t hustle in the world.
If she ended up with him, he would lavish her with tens of millions a year-far more than her modest company could earn.
But Austin’s words struck a different chord in her chest, making it flutter unexpectedly.
