The socialites who had just been mocking Lydia instantly put on a different face for Frederick and Sierra. They complimented Sierra's beauty, her dress, and her necklace, practically treating her as if she were the real Mrs. Foster.
Lydia turned a blind eye to it all and signaled the auctioneer to continue.
When the spotlight hit the pink diamond on display, an icy glare pinned her in place.
The crowd began to whisper as well.
"Isn't that the engagement ring Mr. Foster gave his wife? I remember it was even in the papers back then. What's going on?"
"What else could it be? She's auctioning off her wedding ring... looks like..."
Lydia stood off to the side, ignoring them completely, and gestured for the auctioneer to start.
The auctioneer announced, "Starting bid is $1.2 million, with increments of $100,000. Let the bidding begin."
But the entire venue fell dead silent; no one raised a paddle.
She quickly realized that everyone was too terrified of Frederick to even think about buying the pink diamond.
As the chair of the charity foundation, she couldn't bid. Anxious for the sweet, innocent children sitting on the sofas, she suddenly thought of Harrison Zane. She pulled out her phone and called him. "Harrison, could you bid on the pink diamond for me? I'll transfer the money to you later."
"Of course, Lydia." Just as Harrison's voice fell in her ear...
A clear, deep voice rang out, echoing through the massive auction hall. "$1.3 million."
She followed the voice and saw a tall, commanding man standing against the light.
He wore a dark gray trench coat over a white shirt and black trousers that clung to his athletic build, striding confidently toward her.
His aura was otherworldly, like a high-hanging moon—his dark eyes deep and aloof.
She couldn't shake the feeling she knew him.
Even though this was only their third meeting.
"Xavier Ford? Isn't he the Ford family's youngest son who just dropped in from overseas? He's only been back for two weeks. My husband sent invitations for half a month and couldn't get him to attend a single event, yet this low-key tech mogul actually showed up at The Foster Foundation. Are the Fosters and Fords working on a massive project together?"
"I haven't heard a thing! But with these titans joining forces, Averton's GDP is going to skyrocket! If only my family could get in on it."
"Wow, he's so handsome!"
"He used to be in the Air Force, I bet he looked even better in uniform!"
"Too bad he's so cold and unapproachable."
Listening to the women swoon, Lydia watched the reporters go wild snapping photos of Xavier. Snapping back to reality, she asked, "Harrison, Mr. Ford is at the charity auction. Did you invite him?"
"The Ford family has always been passionate about charity. Mr. Ford asked about it, so I recommended The Foster Foundation," Harrison confirmed.
"Thank you, Harrison."
She hung up the phone, excitedly walked over, and extended her hand to Xavier. "Mr. Ford, welcome!"
