From His Invisible Wife to the World's Icon novel Chapter 53

A flash of guilt crossed Sierra's eyes. She hurried down from the podium and grabbed Frederick's arm, looking the picture of pathetic innocence. "Frederick, this woman is framing me. How could I ever do something like that to Lydia?"

Lydia met the man's ruthless gaze. He was brilliant; he saw right through the setup and knew she was the one who had brought these people here.

But so what if he knew?

The previous afternoon, she had gone to speak with the woman and her son. They had no personal grudge against her—there was no logical reason for them to reject the compensation money just to force her resignation.

After a great deal of persuasion, the woman finally confessed the truth: Sierra had approached them.

Lydia had simply used Sierra's own trick against her to bar her from the foundation.

Anyone else could take the position she was leaving behind, but absolutely not Sierra.

Frederick withdrew his gaze and gently patted Sierra's hand to comfort her. "Escort them out."

Security guards immediately stormed in, dragging the shouting woman and her struggling child out of the room. But Lydia had already achieved her desired effect.

The board president shot Sierra a look of sheer displeasure. Out of respect for Frederick's presence, she held back her temper, but her tone was frosty. "Alright. Let the voting commence."

After that chaotic interruption, the board members wore dark expressions throughout the rest of Sierra's presentation. Even with Frederick sitting right there to back her, no one was willing to give her the time of day.

Once the speeches concluded.

The president said, "We can begin voting."

When Lydia raised her hand in favor of the current vice president, nearly half of the board members followed her lead.

"Wait a minute, what right does Lydia have to vote?" Sierra demanded indignantly.

The president frowned. "As the outgoing president, Mrs. Foster certainly has the right to vote for her successor. Furthermore, her position grants her two votes."

"She was dismissed. How does she still qualify?" Sierra asked haughtily.

"Who told you she was dismissed?" The president looked genuinely bewildered. "Today's election is taking place solely because Mrs. Foster is resigning to pursue other opportunities. Otherwise, this seat wouldn't be open to anyone else."

"She resigned?" Sierra stared at Lydia in total disbelief.

Hearing the moderator invite her to the stage, Lydia ignored Sierra's furious glare. She stood up gracefully and walked to the podium. "I want to thank the president and the members of the foundation for your unwavering support over this past year. It has been a period of immense growth for me..."
