The onlookers had expected to see the legal wife put the mistress in her place, but instead, they watched the husband publicly humiliate his own wife.
"Didn't Ms. Sutton touch, like, a dozen necklaces?"
"That's millions of dollars."
"Mr. Foster is incredibly generous."
"I'm so jealous Sierra has such an amazing brother-in-law."
"Freddie, I just want the one she took! It's Joanna's No. 1 design, it has sentimental value," Sierra whined, emboldened by Frederick's indulgence.
Joanna and Lydia had been best friends since childhood, and Sierra had always been insanely jealous of their bond. Ever since Sierra left the family, she had tried repeatedly to drive a wedge between them, hoping to replace Lydia as Joanna's best friend. But Joanna had shut her down completely, ruthlessly tearing into her for thinking the daughter of a homewrecker could ever be her friend. The rejection had left Sierra humiliated. Now, she just wanted to steal whatever they loved.
Lydia spun around, glaring as Frederick closed the distance between them. "The entire city's press is here. It's bad enough you're parading your mistress around, but do you really want tomorrow's headlines to be about The Foster Group's CEO publicly humiliating his wife for another woman?"
Seeing the media swarming closer, Frederick's brow furrowed. As his gaze locked onto hers, a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes.
She had always been so gentle and accommodating, flawlessly managing both their household and his public image. She never caused a scene. Even Lydia herself hadn't expected to be standing in front of a crowd, tearing away every shred of dignity they had left.
Suddenly, Sierra burst into loud sobs and ran out of the hall.
Frederick snapped out of his daze. He cast one last look at Lydia before turning and sprinting after Sierra.
With the main act gone, the crowd eventually returned their attention to the jewelry showcase.
Sensing that this might be her chance to catch them crossing the line, Lydia bid Joanna a quick goodbye and hurried after them.
Joanna, meanwhile, spotted Xavier entering the venue surrounded by a swarm of executives. She didn't dwell on Lydia's abrupt exit and stepped forward to greet him.
Lydia slipped out the back exit. She caught a glimpse of Frederick and Sierra heading toward the parking garage. Just as she rushed to follow, an arm blocked her path. Trenton Gates' repulsive face appeared from behind a pillar.
A flash of fear spiked through Lydia, but she crushed it down instantly, shooting him a freezing glare. "Haven't you learned your lesson yet?"
