I was just racking my brain for an excuse to stop Steve from staying when there was a sudden knock on the ward door.
It was Isabel.
I had to admire her. Between concerts, commercials, and filming, she still found time to keep a constant eye on Steve.
People with that kind of energy and drive really do succeed in anything they set their minds to.
Her eyes were swollen and red, and she spoke gently, "Steve, I came to check on Ms. Yaxley. Dorothy was here this morning, so it wasn't convenient for me to say much. I heard Ms. Yaxley was badly injured. How is she now?"
Steve replied, "The surgery went well. The doctor said there won't be any lasting complications."
Isabel said, "That's good. If something really happened to her, I'd never be at peace for the rest of my life."
Seeing her reddened eyes, Steve asked, "What's wrong with your eyes?"
"It's nothing," she said, dabbing at the corners of her eyes.
With tears shimmering, she added, "I'm just too sensitive. I care too much about the comments online."
She didn't mention the article I had published that morning, yet every word seemed to accuse me of smearing her.
Steve frowned and shot me a look with a trace of displeasure in his eyes.
Earlier that morning, when Simone mentioned that Griffin Group's stock price had been affected by my article, he hadn't reproached me at all.
But now, because Isabel's eyes were swollen from crying, the way he looked at me had changed.
She was choking up as if she were holding back her grievance. "It's Dorothy and I who are at fault, always making Ms. Yaxley unhappy. Now that I see Ms. Yaxley is fine, I'm relieved. Steve, take good care of her. I… I'll go now."
With that, she covered her mouth and left, looking every bit like the woman whose home had been wrecked.
I watched her flawless performance with disdain and asked Steve, "Aren't you going after her to comfort her? What if she cries herself blind? Don't tell me you'll ask me to donate my corneas then?"
Steve's gaze, cold with displeasure, locked onto me. "Why are you always so sharp-tongued? I thought the article this morning would've helped you vent. Zara, don't take things too far."
With that, he stood up and hurried after her.
