The silence hung between them for a few seconds-long enough that Margaret began to worry she’d crossed a line. She was just about to brush it off when he finally responded.

“No,” Cheiron said, his voice steady.

“Oh.” Margaret gave a small nod. “Thought so.”

Cheiron studied her. For a fleeting moment, something shifted behind those pale gray eyes, but it was gone before she could place it. “What made you think that?”

“You just don’t seem like the settling-down type.” Margaret shifted deeper into the couch cushions, settling into a more relaxed pose.

Cheiron didn’t reply right away. He simply kept watching her-not in a judging way, but more like he was taking her in.

“Why not?” she pressed, then caught herself. They’d barely known each other half an hour, and here she was prying like some government interviewer. “Never mind-you don’t have to answer. Just making small talk.”

Cheiron paused briefly before his gaze drifted from her face toward the window. “Never found the right person,” he said, his tone as detached as if he were discussing the weather.

“Yeah, that tracks,” Margaret replied with a slow nod. “With the Central System handling all the matches, it’s tough to end up with someone who actually fits. Take me-the System somehow decided I belonged with three different Sclass partners. They all thought I was way out of my league, so for three years I might as well have been invisible.”

She let out a short breath before adding, “Now that I’m divorced, though, at least the System should pair me within my own tier. Cclass with Cclass. No one looking down on anyone that way.”

Cheiron’s eyes came back from the window and landed on her face. “You want a C-class match?”

“What else would I want?” Margaret spread her hands. “Get matched with another S-class and get ignored for another three years? I’m not a glutton for punishment.”

Cheiron didn’t say anything. He just looked at her. His stare made Margaret a little uncomfortable, but she couldn’t be bothered to figure out why. The guy didn’t talk much anyway. So she could just let him look. It wasn’t like she would lose a limb. And honestly, being stared at by someone this good-looking didn’t seem like much of a loss.

The room fell quiet again. Margaret glanced at the clock on the wall. Only twenty minutes had passed. She sighed and sank even deeper into the sofa.

“Cheiron,” she said.

“Yes?”

“Are you always this free?” She pointed at the document in his hand. “You just read that all afternoon?”

Cheiron looked down at the document, then back up at her. “This is my job.”

“I know,” Margaret said, her tone casual, like they were just making small talk. “I mean-don’t you have other patients? Isn’t it a waste of your time just sitting here with me?”

Cheiron paused for a second. “You’re my only appointment this afternoon.”

Margaret blinked. A flicker of suspicion crossed her mind.

A big hospital like this, and the psychological counseling center has only me as a patient?

But she quickly let it go.
