Margaret ignored Primo’s sales pitch. She lifted her foot and stepped through the threshold.

The heavy alloy door sealed shut behind her, silent. The way back was gone.

The space inside was larger than she’d expected. The man standing before the glass blast wall heard her footsteps and turned.

He was brown-haired with amber eyes, and the shock on his face was plain to see.

He hadn’t expected anyone to walk into this high-risk zone alone. And he definitely hadn’t expected a female-strolling in like she was taking a walk.

Margaret stopped.

She didn’t look at the glass wall. Didn’t even glance at the black serpent thrashing behind it.

She looked straight into those amber eyes. “Where is Baar?”

Gary’s shock curdled into something closer to disbelief.

His hand lifted on reflex, pointing at the glass behind him. The massive creature beyond it slammed its head against the wall with a deafening, bone-rattling impact.

Margaret frowned. She did not look away. Her eyes stayed locked on his. Her voice held the same steady pace as she asked again.

“Where is Baar?”.

Gary wiped the shock from his face in an instant. It was replaced by a thin, plastic smile-one that felt utterly wrong against the sound of a giant serpent battering itself against the walls.

“Lady Margaret, what are you talking about?” He gestured at the glass, his voice light. “Commander Iverson is right there.”

Right on cue, the serpent went berserk again.

The impact shook the alloy floor beneath their feet. Fresh cracks spidered across the wall.

Margaret frowned. She quickly glanced through the glass. The serpent’s frenzy looked real. The force of its blows looked real. The man curled in the corner, his fatigues torn, body coiled tight-every line of him. screamed agony.

Every inch of that room made one thing crystal clear: this was Baar.

A thread of doubt crept in.

Did I get this wrong?

But logic pressed back harder. There was a fatal flaw in the chain, and it was standing right in front of her. It was Gary.

She pulled her gaze back and mer Gary’s eyes for the third time. “Where is Baar?”

Gary stared at her for ten long seconds.

Then he laughed. His mask fell away, and he didn’t bother to put it back on. He simply turned to the control console and tapped in a string of commands.

“Lady Margaret, follow me.”

Margaret stood her ground, studying his back.

In her head, Primo’s voice burst out, frantic.

“Host! What’s going on? Isn’t Commander Iverson right there behind the glass? This guy’s smile is seriously creepy. He doesn’t look like a good guy. Are we really following him?”

Margaret stepped forward and fell in behind Gary.

“He might not be a bad guy,” she answered silently.

Primo blanked. “Huh? What do you mean he might not be a bad guy? Host, don’t talk in riddles. My CPU is gonna fry.”

Margaret tuned it out.

She followed Gary past the massive glass wall, deeper into the core zone.

They stopped at a hidden metal door. Gary submitted to a retinal and palm scan. The door slid open on both sides, revealing a narrow elevator car.

Margaret didn’t hesitate. She walked straight in.

The doors closed. The car dropped, fast.

Gary leaned against the wall, hands in his uniform pockets, and tilted his head to study her.

“You’re that comfortable following me down?” He raised an eyebrow. “Not worried I’m the bad guy?”

Margaret watched the red floor numbers tick down on the display.

Of course she was worried. Why else would she have spent her newly earned points on that high-grade shield?

But what came out of her mouth was something else entirely.

“Baar is SSS-class. His spiritual power radiation in a full frenzy is enough to flatten this entire planet. Anyone who gets too close would have their blood vessels rupture on the spot. You’re an SS-class lieutenant standing roughly fifteen feet from the source. Not a single drop of sweat,” She paused. “That doesn’t add up.”
