Baar’s breath scorched against her skin, and Margaret flinched, pulling her neck back. It took a long moment for the dizziness to pass.

She turned her head to glance at Baar slumped against her shoulder, then at the giant serpent in the

corner.

The black python that had been thrashing violently was now coiled into a silent, hulking mass, its massive head resting obediently on its tail.

Is it finally over?

“Hey.” Her voice came out flat. “If you’re awake, say something. My legs are numb.”

Baar didn’t move or speak. Just steady breathing.

Margaret stared at the ceiling.

He fell asleep? After kissing me senseless, he just passed out?

She tried shifting, hoping to free herself from the awkward position. The arm around her waist tightened instantly and yanked her back.

“Don’t move.” The voice by her ear was rough and low, heavy with nasality.

Margaret froze. Moving now would be playing with fire.

Baar finally lifted his head. His eyes had returned to their normal vertical slits, the terrifying crimson receded. He looked at her in silence, his gaze brushing over her swollen lips before settling on her eyes. They stared at each other.

A few seconds later, Margaret broke the silence with a frown. “What are you, a biter?”

She scrambled off his lap. The moment her feet hit the floor, her knees nearly buckled. She grabbed the edge of the bed to steady herself and straightened her rumpled clothes.

“Since you’re fine now, I’m leaving.” She dusted off her hands and pointed at the door. “You’ve got a mess out there waiting for you.”

Past the glass wall, Kiran’s body still lay in a pool of blood. The blackened hole in his forehead looked stark beneath the flashing red alarm lights.

Baar looked past her shoulder at the corpse. His dark gold gaze narrowed, a flicker of undisguised disgust crossing his face.

“You killed him?” His voice was back to its usual cold hardness, just rougher at the edges.

“What do you think?” Margaret rolled her eyes. “He was trying to kill you. What was I supposed to do, send him a thank-you card?”

“He had a death grip on me. If I hadn’t gotten through, we’d all be dead.” She turned to face him. “It’s called self-defense. Ever heard of it?”

Baar said nothing. He pushed himself up from the bed, but his strength gave out, and he dropped back down with a grunt.

Margaret watched him struggle and felt a rare flicker of sympathy.

“Can you even stand? Want me to call a medic?”

“No.” He refused flatly. He took several deep breaths, forcing down the weakness. “Help me up.”

Margaret pursed her lips.

Same old commanding tone. Some things never changed.

She walked over and offered her hand.

He gripped it and pulled himself to his feet. The two of them made their way out of the isolation chamber.

Passing Kiran’s body, Margaret instinctively averted her eyes. Baar stopped and looked down coldly at the bloodstain on the floor.

The elevator doors opened. Margaret stepped in first, and Baar followed.

Inside the cramped car, she leaned into the corner and watched the floor numbers tick by.
