“Where’s the mess hall? I need to see this for myself.” Margaret kicked off the covers and climbed out of bed.
There’s
Baar met her expectant look and said it plainly. “There’s no mess hall.”
Margaret froze mid-motion. “What?”
“No mess hall.” Baar repeated it without inflection. “Just a supply vault.”
“Then what do you eat around here?”
“Nutrient solution.”
She’d expected as much, yet the reality still stung.
“You can’t live on that stuff every day.” Margaret stared at him. “Three meals a day, all nutrient solution? No variety?”
“Nutrient solution is efficient, convenient, and provides all the energy required for combat.” Baar was stating facts, nothing more. “Eating requires chewing and swallowing, which wastes time. On a battlefield where conditions shift by the second, every moment counts. One high-grade nutrient solution, five seconds to drink. It sustains you for three days.”
Margaret’s expression fell.
Her stay in the Valoran Galaxy had utterly spoiled her. Timothy spared no effort daily, hunting down rare ingredients and making sure every meal was something special. Too easy to get used to luxury. Too hard to give it up.
“You too?” she asked, still holding out hope.
He’s the commander of the entire Federal Military. Surely he gets a private kitchen?
“Me too. His answer was final.”
Margaret collapsed back onto the bed in despair and stared blankly at the gray ceiling, utterly defeated. “Fine. Nutrient solution it is.”
Beggars can’t be choosers. Not like I could starve myself to death on this barren rock.
Baar watched her scowl and let out a quiet laugh.
He stood and adjusted the tie on his black lounge robe,

“A few days ago, the Second Fleet was sweeping a combat sector on the edge of the Sirius Galaxy.” His voice dropped low. “The planet’s ecosystem was still relatively intact—not fully contaminated. Some of the original vegetation survived.”
Margaret instantly pricked at the sound.
“While the logistics unit was clearing our insectoid carcasses, they took down a few Collhorn Beasts that

had wandered onto the battlefield.” Baar watched her react and a flicker of amusement crossed his face. “Meat scans caine back clean. Toxin-free, high-protein, grade confirmed. They shipped a few back and placed them in cryo-storage. The plan was to use them as raw material for high-grade nutrient solution.”
Margaret’s eyes lit up. “Coilhorn Beast? Is it good?” eyes lit up. “Coilhorn Beast?
“Nobody’s tried it.” Baar told it straight. “Everyone drinks nutrient solution.”
“What a wastel” Margaret slapped the mattress and shot upright. “You have actual meat and you’re all still drinking nutrient solution? Has everyone in this base lost their minds?”
Baar ignored her rant. “I’ll have some sent over, I’ll grill it for you.”
Margaret went still.
He’s going to cook?

She studied the cold-faced man before her, and an absurd picture popped uninvited into her head: Baar in
a frilly floral apron, spatula in hand, standing at the stove with a completely deadpan expression.
No. Way too cursed.
She shook the image off immediately.
“You?” Margaret’s eyes were full of doubt. “Commander Iverson, you know how to grill? I’d rather not get food poisoning.”
“Wilderness survival training is mandatory in the first year at the academy.” Baar was unbothered by her skepticism. “On a barren planet with no supply line, building a fire and grilling meat is a baseline survival skill. I’ve even grilled insectoids before. A cut of Coilhorn Beast is not going to be a problem.”
Grilled insectoids?!
Without warning, the images from the ship flooded back-those compound eyes, the severed limbs oozing green slime, the barbed carapaces.
Half an hour later, the logistics deck’s open platform was ready. “Open” was generous-it was a cleared observation area, covered by a transparent shield, with the black expanse of space visible overhead.
A few metal crates that normally held patrol equipment had been commandeered as impromptu work
surfaces.
The elevator doors opened. Gary stepped out.
