But the major’s gaze still strayed past Baar’s shoulder, searching for Margaret.

He wasn’t the only one. Across the entire medical bay, hundreds of eyes were fixed on the woman behind him-reverent, fervent, brimming with gratitude, as if she were a living saint.
But with Baar standing there, his presence radiating a clear warning, no one dared step forward.
Baar’s jaw tightened, his expression darkening with unspoken possessiveness. He turned, seized Margaret by the wrist, and tugged her behind him, shielding her more thoroughly from view.
Margaret stumbled at the sudden yank and barely stopped herself from rolling her eyes.
What is wrong with him? Is he worried I’m upstaging him, or is this… jealousy?
“Commander Iverson.” She shook off his grip, her voice cool. “Why so tense? I’m not going to eat your soldiers.”
Baar stopped and turned to face her, taking in her unrepentant, slightly mocking expression. His throat moved, but nothing came out.
What am I supposed to say? That watching those men stare at her like this makes my chest tight with a bitter, possessive ache? That I don’t want anyone’s hands anywhere near her?
“It’s chaotic in here,” he said stiffly. “Don’t wander off.”
Then he strode deeper into the medical bay to confirm casualty figures and evacuation progress. His entire posture hummed with unspoken irritation.
Margaret watched him go and tutted softly.
“Ms. Greene. The warm voice came from beside her. Cheiron had appeared at her side without a sound, a trace of quiet amusement in his gray eyes.
Baar’s intentions are written all over his face. A shame, really. That stubborn, overbearing streak of his, paired with Margaret’s complete disinterest in reading between the lines-this is going to be a very long pursuit.
“Commander Iverson was simply concerned for your safety,” Cheiron offered, covering for Baar before pivoting smoothly. “I’m far more concerned about your physical state. An output of spiritual power on that scale-even for an SSS-class-would place tremendous strain on the spiritual realm.”
His tone shifted, turning clinical, “Are you experiencing any dizziness? Any sharp pain in your spiritual
realm?”
Margaret took internal stock. Sharp pain? She felt like she could eat two whole roast legs of lamb and still have room.
Whatever that mysterious energy source was, it had actually expanded her spiritual realm rather than depleting it. But she couldn’t tell Cheiron that.
If he found out about an unidentified energy source inside her, she’d probably end up strapped down and sliced open for research.

“I’m fine,” she lied smoothly, not a flicker of hesitation on her face. “Just a little tired.”

Cheiron’s gray eyes rested on her. After a long moment, he inclined his head. “In that case, once we return to Prime Planet, I’ll escort you to Central Hospital for a full medical scan.”
His voice remained gentle, but there was no room for refusal. “Your current condition concerns the safety of the entire galaxy. There can be no oversights.”
Margaret opened her mouth to refuse, but how could she push back against an excuse that big?
“Fine,” she said, nodding half-heartedly.
The military swept the battlefield with brutal efficiency. Three hours later, the full evacuation was complete.
Massive interstellar transport ships stretched in formation, their engines thrumming through the base’s foundation.
Margaret followed Baar onto the command deck of the main ship.
