Baar scoffed coldly. “She’s still freshening up.”
“I can wait.” Cheiron didn’t move.

The two SSS-class males faced off in the doorway, their auras clashing silently, neither giving an inch.

A patrol soldier passing through the corridor held his breath so tight he barely dared exhale. He skirted the wall and slipped past.
The bathroom door opened. Margaret walked out, toweling off her face. She stopped at the sight of the standoff.
“Morning, Mr. Jewett.”
“Good morning, Ms. Greene.” Cheiron’s smile was warm and easy. “May I have ten minutes of your time?”
“Come in.” Margaret motioned him in.
Baar stepped aside, his face dark, and followed. He sank onto the couch, his gaze pinned to Cheiron’s every move.
Cheiron opened his medical kit and took out a compact scanner, pressing it gently against Margaret’s temple.
The device powered on, and rows of data streamed across the holographic display. Cheiron studied the screen. His gray eyes narrowed slightly.
“What is it?” Margaret kept her voice level. She really didn’t need her mystery power source getting flagged.
“Strange.” Cheiron looked up, a thread of curiosity in his voice. “Under normal conditions, high-output exertion causes the spiritual realm to contract or show signs of fatigue. Yours shows no damage at all. In fact, it appears to have undergone secondary expansion. Capacity has increased by fifteen percent since your last examination.”
Baar frowned. “Fifteen percent? What kind of side effects are we talking about?”
“None that I can detect.” Cheiron put the scanner away, his gaze settling on Margaret. “This goes against every known rule of how spiritual power works. Ms. Greene, once we return to Prime Planet, you must come to Central Hospital-no, the Academy of Sciences-for a full examination.”
Baar’s voice cut in from the couch, “She’s not your test subject.”
Cheiron ignored the jab and offered Margaret a gentle smile. “The medical bay is ready whenever you are.”
Before anyone could respond, Margaret’s Holo-bracelet buzzed. She tapped the answer key, and a holographic projection of a golden-haired, blue-eyed young man leaped into the air.
“My Lady!” Timothy leaned in close to the lens, Behind him stretched the lavish interior of the Hurst Group’s executive office. His tailored suit was immaculate, but his golden hair was a total mess-he looked like a golden retriever who’d just rolled out of bed.

“I saw the battle reports! Are you hurt? Did you get injured?” He rattled off questions one after another, his blue eyes burning with worry. “That old man didn’t protect you, did he? I knew those military grunts couldn’t be trusted!”
Baar, the old man in question, sat two paces away, his face darkening into a thunderous scowl.
“Timothy,” Baar snarled through gritted teeth. “Watch your mouth.”
Timothy angled his head, only now catching Baar at the edge of the frame. He didn’t dial it back. His grin only widened, his tone turning deliberately obnoxious.
“Oh, Commander Iverson. Didn’t see you there. I heard Base Zero got raided by insectoids? Tsk. Sounds like the Federal Military’s security systems are due for an upgrade. You should consider the Hurst Group’s latest line. For Margaret’s sake, I’ll even give you twenty percent off.”
