Security mechs held the perimeter, keeping the crowds of civilians and reporters from every major outlet at bay.
Word of Margaret’s emergency departure from the Valoran Galaxy had sent Starnet into a complete frenzy.
Now, with this kind of reception, anyone could see this SSS-class female had done something monumental on the front lines.
Miniature cameras hovered thick in the air. Flashbulbs popped in relentless, blinding waves. The mechs’ tracks ground against the tarmac, warning lights strobing, and still the crowd surged forward.
The hatch opened. Margaret descended the ramp at an unhurried pace in a black silk halter gown, one of Timothy’s custom pieces.
The skirt swayed with her stride, clinging softly to every curve. The fabric was impossibly soft. Her hair was pinned in a loose chignon, a single deep-sea pearl ornament catching the light.
Hours ago, when she’d stepped into the cabin wearing this dress, both Baar and Cheiron had stopped mid- motion and stared for a full thirty seconds.
Now that effect was magnified a hundredfold for the waiting crowd.
The flashbulbs across the spaceport doubled their pace. Gasps rippled through the crowd, though they had less to do with the dress and more to do with the awe of a female returning from the front lines.
“Lady Margaret, welcome back.” The Imperial cabinet secretary stepped forward first, his smile polished. “His Majesty has heard of your valor on the battlefield and has arranged a banquet at the palace in your honor. The Imperial hovercar is waiting. If you would please-”
Before he could finish, an old general from the Federal Military Council shouldered his way forward, his booming voice cutting straight across the secretary’s. “Lady Margaret is an honored guest of the Federal Military! The service has prepared a victory banquet of the highest order. Commander Iverson, why aren’t you escorting Lady Margaret to the car? You expect our esteemed guest to stand here in the wind?”
These two factions normally maintained a facade of public civility. Now they were openly vying for her right in front of the press and civilians.
Margaret exchanged polite pleasantries, her manner distant and flawless,
Behind her, Baar’s face darkened. He knew exactly what these old schemers were after. She was the strategic asset that could reshape the balance of power-and they all wanted to get their hooks into her.
Primo’s voice surfaced in her head, practically buzzing with glee. “Host, this is it! Empire and Federation, fighting over you in the street. The dramal The scandal! Who’s getting the honor tonight?”
Margaret ignored it. She swept her gaze over the crowd-and spotted the flash of golden hair instantly.
Timothy stood surrounded by a ring of hulking bodyguards, standing on tiptoe, craning his neck to peer through the crowd.

He’d dressed for the occasion: a sharply tailored white suit made him look like a pampered prince, and a sapphire brooch worth a fortune gleamed at his collar.
Unfortunately, the Hurst Group’s mo
Unfortunately, the Hurst Group’s money didn’t buy access to the political and military inner circle. The security mechs held him firmly outside the line.
He was being jostled backward, his expression souring, but he refused to look away. His eyes stayed fixed on the ramp, desperate and hopeful.
Margaret stepped past the bickering politicians and walked straight toward the edge of the crowd. The moment she moved, the people in front of her parted.
The Imperial and Federal representatives froze. They followed her gaze to find Timothy, the golden- haired, blue-eyed heir of the Hurst Group, waiting at the barrier.
Their expressions shifted in unison, and both sides turned to glare at their respective champions- Cheiron and Baar-with undisguised frustration.
Cheiron maintained his gentle smile, unreadable as ever.
Baar’s fists clenched at his sides, knuckles cracking audibly.
The second Timothy saw Margaret walking toward him, his whole face lit up. He shoved past his bodyguards, closed the distance in a single stride, and swept her into his arms.
He was tall, but he bent down anyway, pressing his chin into the curve of her neck and nuzzling her neck unapologetically.
