“This is what you call good faith after a whole night of talking?” Baar’s voice was low and sharp. “A fancy advisory title with no real power, plus a handful of meaningless perks? You really think she’s some naive little girl you can string along?”

Darren wiped cold sweat off his forehead. He opened his mouth to speak, but Baar cut him off before he could get a word out.

He said, “Rewrite it. I want actual authority. If you can’t give her that? You’ll all be screwed the second she takes the Imperial Household’s offer.”

With that, Baar turned and strode out of the office. He pulled up his Holo-bracelet, and Margaret’s message popped up right as he opened it.

The icy cold in his golden e

The icy cold in his golden eyes melted away instantly. Turned out he wasn’t her least favorite husband after all.

He typed back, “Got it. I’ll be home by dinner.”

The first-floor study was spacious. The entire south wall had been knocked out and replaced with one-way floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Step outside, and you were in the wide backyard-a wicker swing Margaret had ordered right after moving in still sat on the lawn.

Inside, two large black walnut desks were arranged in an L shape. Cheiron sat at the one by the window, gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose, his long fingers tapping away at a virtual keyboard.

He stopped typing the second he heard the door open and looked up.

Margaret walked in and filled him in on everything Tyrone had said in the hallway.

“The black market intel network is no joke.” Cheiron took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose, his tone calm. “The fact that they’re laying their cards on the table means they want something from us right now-and they’re not here to cause trouble. Free help? We’d be stupid not to take it.”

“Same thing I was thinking.” Margaret walked over to the empty desk and sat down. She pulled the silver chip out of her pocket and slotted it into her Holo-bracelet’s reader.

The data took a few seconds to decrypt. Cheiron walked over with a freshly brewed cup of black coffee and stopped just behind her chair, off to one side.

“Mind if I watch with you?” he asked. His voice was right above her head, laced with the faint, bitter aroma of coffee.

Margaret didn’t say a word. She just rolled her chair to the side a little, clearing a spot right in front of the screen for him.

Cheiron braced one hand on the edge of the desk and leaned forward slightly, As the space between them shrank, Margaret could clearly pick up the clean, fresh scent he always wore.

A long, dense stack of files popped up on the screen.

The first page was a brief bio of Greven. He was born to Lesley’s favorite husband, raised with a top-tier elite education, and had a spotless, impressive resume.

Margaret stared at the words “Lesley” and “husband” for a full three seconds, stunned.

“Wait.” She pointed at the screen and turned to Cheiron. “The current ruler of the Empire… is female?”

“Of course.” Cheiron kept his eyes fixed on the screen, saying it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “In a monarchy, a female heir is the best option. Her husbands automatically form a rock-solid alliance of shared interests and military backing. There have been plenty of male emperors throughout history-they just tend to spark more civil unrest.”

Margaret took a second to wrap her head around that, then thought back to Tyrone’s snarky comments that morning. “So how do royal females usually pick their husbands?”

“Almost always from the top noble families.” Cheiron stood up straight and took a sip of coffee. “And for that whole pure bloodline’ nonsense? They usually pick brothers from the same family.”

Margaret pressed her lips in distaste.

There it is again.

The royal family really took the whole breeding thing to a whole other level.

“If females have such an advantage, why didn’t Lesley have a daughter?” she asked.

“She didn’t.” Cheiron shook his head. “She only had three sons in her whole life. The eldest, Prince Marvin Earhart, is useless. His father was…”

Cheiron paused for a beat. “Prince Marvin was born with genetic defects that stunted his intellectual development. He’s kept confined to a side palace full-time. The youngest, Prince Norman Earhart, was a late-in-life child. Lesley had a complicated labor with him that caused permanent damage to her health, and she has been bedridden ever since. Prince Norman isn’t even ten years old yet. He hasn’t developed his spiritual power at all.”

Margaret got it now.

Lesley was sick, Norman was a kid, and Marvin was basically disabled. Of course, Greven was next in line for the throne. No wonder he was in such a rush to win her over-the only SSS-class female in the galaxy. He was trying to lock in double insurance before he took the crown.
