Margaret didn’t argue. She pushed open the door to the room on the left.

The space inside was tastefully decorated. Some kind of unknown incense burned in the air-faint, and nice-smelling

She walked over to the table, poured herself a glass of water, and drank it all in one go. Only then did the tight, strung-out feeling in her nerves ease up a little.

Cheiron didn’t head back to his own room. He followed her inside and hung his coat on the rack by the door.

They stood on opposite sides of the table-close enough to talk, but not too close.

“What’s the plan from here?” Cheiron asked.

Margaret rested her cheek on one hand, tapping her fingers absently against the tabletop.

She said, “Timothy should’ve already leaked all of Greven’s crimes across the whole net. The Imperial Household will put out a warrant to save face-pin everything on me. They’ll probably even frame me as someone brainwashed by the black market, a traitor to the Empire.”

Margaret huffed a cold laugh. “The harder they push that narrative, the guiltier they look. Greven couldn’t have pulled off those live experiments alone. There’s a whole web of people profiting off this behind him. Harold was just one piece of it.”

Cheiron nodded, laying out the facts calmly. “Greven’s death will throw them off balance for a little while. But once they get their heads on straight, they’ll do everything they can to erase the evidence. They’ll probably destroy every last one of those failed test subjects, too.”

“That’s why I came to the black market.” Margaret sat up straight, her gaze sharp and clear. “Tyrone’s intel network stretches across the whole galaxy. If those people make a move, they’ll leave a trail. I’m gonna tear that whole profit chain out by the roots,”

She looked over at Cheiron, her tone more serious than usual. “What about you? You followed me out to this lawless middle of nowhere, Are you just gonna give up being head of Central Hospital? What’re you gonna tell the Academy of Sciences?”

Cheiron pushed his glasses up his nose. A flash of white light glinted off the lenses.

“I’m a victim-kidnapped by the black market,” he said it completely straight, like he wasn’t lying through his teeth. “As for the hospital director job? Whoever’s good enough can have it. My uncle will handle things at the Academy.”

He looked right at Margaret, his gray eyes reflecting her face. “I told you before that your spiritual power is the galaxy’s most valuable treasure, But I’ve changed my mind about that.”

Cheiron leaned forward slightly, closing the gap between them. “You’re worth more than your spiritual power. Way more.”

Margaret held his gaze.

Cheiron always carried himself like a polished, restrained gentleman-cold and put-together. But right now, the ambition and possessiveness under those gray eyes were impossible to hide.

She’d always known Cheiron was smart. Smart people never made bad deals.

He was willing to leave everything he had in the Empire behind to follow her. It wasn’t just some fixation on her he saw how she could turn the whole game around.

“Fair enough,” Margaret smiled and held out her hand. “Pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Jewett

Cheiron took her hand, but he didn’t let go right away.

Margaret didn’t pull her hand back either. She watched as Cheiron took off his glasses and tossed them casually onto the table.

Without the lenses in the way, the hunger and possessiveness in his gray eyes poured out completely- thick, heavy, impossible to ignore.

“Real smooth move, Mr. Jewett,” Margaret laughed, leaning back until her waist pressed against the hard edge of the table. “You gonna try to get everything for nothing?”

Cheiron took one step forward, his tall frame boxing her in between him and the table.

He tilted his head down, his nose almost brushing her cheek.

Cheiron murmured, “Timothy’s too young. Baar’s too impulsive. You need someone steady-someone you can count on. I’m your knife. I don’t just know how to fight. I can clean up every mess you leave behind. I can even hand you the Empire’s deepest secrets on a silver platter.”

Margaret smiled, “A knife that sharp? You might cut yourself.”

“It’s your knife.” Cheiron laced their fingers together, then pressed her hand to his chest, right over his heart. Spiritual power hummed between them-the heavy, overwhelming aura of an SSS-class male wrapping around her completely.

“Cheiron.” Margaret looked up at him. “Your heart’s beating really fast.”

Cheiron didn’t answer. He just kept looking at her with that intense, all-consuming gaze.

The room went quiet for a few seconds. Then he spoke, “My frenzy level spiked.”

Margaret raised an eyebrow and laughed.

That is Baar’s go-to line. When has he even heard that? Has he picked it up back in the living room?

When Margaret didn’t say anything, Cheiron leaned down. His lips brushed her ear, and his breathing was shaky and unsteady. “Is this okay?”

It was almost funny, really. The always-composed head of Central Hospital, asking for permission like this at a time like this.
