Margaret glanced down at Norman and gave her small fingers a reassuring squeeze. When she looked up. the corner of her mouth curved.

“Looks like this door won’t open easily today.”

The hovercar doors slid open without a sound. The Royal Guards raised their rifles in unison, muzzles aimed at the ground, but the threat was unmistakable.

The way they held their weapons had a parade-ground stiffness to it-elbows at textbook angles, chins lifted just so. They looked like they’d stepped straight out of an academy training manual.

Polished, certainly. But set against the Aegis Squad, men forged in blood and battle, the difference was stark.

Margaret didn’t rush to get out. She stayed where she was, one hand resting loosely on her knee.

Cheiron stepped out first and took his place beside the door.

Ryan signaled, and the Aegis Squad dispersed, tactical boots hitting the stone in sharp, synchronized thuds. In the space of a breath, they had the hovercar locked inside a tight protective perimeter.

Twenty-odd men, silent and still, yet the pressure rolled outward in waves. A few of the younger soldiers on the Royal Guards line edged back half a step without realizing it,

From behind the barrier, a male strode forward. He gave a sloppy, half-regulation salute and let his gaze skip past Cheiron, landing squarely on Margaret inside the car.

“Apologies.” His tone carried just enough courtesy to stay technically polite. “The Cabinet has issued a temporary lockdown. No unauthorized personnel are permitted entry. I’ll have to ask you to turn back.”

Margaret studied him. He had the fine-boned look of old money-high brow, a sharp, clean jaw, his uniform crisp and entirely unmarked by wear.

“Your name?” she asked.

He straightened his spine and lifted his chin, the faintest trace of superiority in his voice. “Royal Guards, Guards Battalion, Major Colin Wilson.”

“I see.” Margaret nodded. “I asked for your name, not your pedigree.”

The air went stone-still. Colin’s face flushed a deep, splotchy red, the veins in his neck pulsing visibly.

From the Aegis line behind them, someone failed to suppress a snort.

Ryan didn’t even turn his head. His boot shot backward and caught the offending soldier hard in the shin. “Where’s your discipline?” he hissed. “Her Grace is handling a mutt. You find that funny? Straighten up.”

The soldier swallowed his laugh and snapped back to attention, though his shoulders kept twitching.

Colin’s hands were shaking. He forced the words through clenched teeth. “Your Grace, I must ask you to watch your language. I am acting on the Cabinet’s orders-”

“The Cabinet?” Margaret cut him off. She stepped out of the car, then turned and lifted Norman down onto the ground, keeping the child’s hand in hers.

Norman pressed close to her side, her expression steady, though her grip on Margaret’s hand had tightened.

“Who holds supreme authority over the Imperial Compound?” Margaret fixed her eyes on Colin.

The question hung heavy in the air, unanswered,

“You’ve studied Imperial protocol, I assume.” Every word landed clean and sharp. “The direct Imperial line holds first authority. First the sovereign, then the heir.”

She drew Norman forward. “Norman may not have been crowned yet, but he is the rightful heir. You’re a major in the Royal Guards, and you’ve brought armed soldiers to bar the legitimate successor from the gates of his own residence. Who gave you that order?” Her words landed like a blade, each one sharp and unyielding.

Colin’s hand drifted toward the holster at his belt. He was still holding on. “The Cabinet is acting in the interest of security-”

“Security?” Margaret cut him off again. “What kind of security requires barring the crown heir? Unless the Royal Guards are planning a coup?”
