Craig let out a cold huff. “The Royal Guards have defended the royal family for generations. On what grounds is their trustworthiness suddenly called into question?”

“Ten minutes ago, a Guards Battalion major by the name of Colin Wilson aimed his weapon at Prince Norman just outside the main gates.” Cheiron’s tone stayed unhurried and even. “Under Volume Nine, Article Fifteen of the Imperial Code, that qualifies as attempted rebellion. If the Cabinet wishes to dispute the guardian’s security authority, we can resolve the matter through the judiciary first-starting with a full investigation of the Guards Battalion from top to bottom.”

Craig’s words caught in his throat. He’d planned to corner her with protocol, and now Cheiron was reciting the legal code better than he could.

“You-” He jabbed a finger toward Cheiron. “Cheiron, you’re a member of the Academy of Sciences. And you’re siding with an outsider?”

“I follow Imperial law.” Cheiron adjusted his cuff. “One correction, Lord Hall. Lady Margaret is the Regent appointed by the late sovereign’s will. She is also my wife. She is not an outsider. What you just said constitutes a serious breach of decorum.”

Craig’s face went white, then red, the veins on the back of his hand bulging around the head of his cane. He was used to giving orders in the cabinet chambers. Being dressed down like this, in public-he had no defense for it.

“Enough, Craig. There’s no need to work yourself into a state.”

A deep voice carried from inside the cabinet chamber, followed by measured footsteps.

A middle-aged man stepped out, dressed in a tailored deep-purple suit. His face bore a clear resemblance to Lesley-the same unmistakable Imperial bloodline, gold eyes and red hair,

He was Darien Earhart, Lesley’s own younger brother.

Craig stepped aside and gave him the floor.

Darien came down the stairs, a genial smile fixed on his face. He didn’t so much as glance at the Aegis muzzles leveled in his direction. He walked straight up and stopped three paces from Margaret.

“Your Grace. Your reputation precedes you.” He inclined his head. “When the will was made public yesterday, I wondered why my sister would hand such a heavy burden to a young woman she’d only just met. Seeing you today, I understand.”

Margaret watched him perform and said nothing.

Darien didn’t seem to mind. His gaze shifted to Norman beside her leg, and the smile on his face deepened. He bent down and reached out a hand.

“Norman. Come to your uncle.” He geniled his voice. “You must have been terrified last night. Your mother passed so suddenly-I wasn’t able to reach the palace in time to bring you home. But that’s all over now. Come. Let me take you back where you belong. Imperial blood shouldn’t be left in the hands of strangers.”

Every word emphasized blood.

Lesley had been a female, iron-fisted, and she’d kept Darien suppressed for most of his life. Now she was dead, leaving behind a six-year-old “male” heir.

In Darien’s eyes, the boy was a perfect puppet. Once Norman was under his control, a little cooperation from the Cabinet and overturning the will would only be a matter of time.

Margaret didn’t move. She wanted to see how far this old schemer would carry his charade.

Norman shrank back behind Margaret.

“Norman.” Darien dropped the smile and put on his stern elder face. “Lesley was too ill at the end. Her mind wasn’t clear. That’s why she handed you over to an outsider. Direct blood kin are your rightful legal guardians. Be good. Come here.”

Ryan’s finger was already resting on the trigger. Cheiron’s eyes had gone cold.

Margaret was calculating exactly how to rip that smug mask off his face when the small hand in hers pulled free.

Norman stepped out from behind Margaret.

“Uncle Darien.” Norman’s voice was still soft, still young, but every word came out with startling clarity.

Darien’s face brightened. He thought the child was about to fold. He bent even lower. “Yes, good boy-”

“Mother was not unclear,” Norman cut him off.

Darien’s smile froze on his face.

“Mother said that of all the royal relatives, you are the greediest.” Norman recited the words with unwavering precision. “She said you would even scheme over the mining rights to the Third Galaxy. She said if she gave me to you, you’d swallow me whole without a second thought.”

The hall fell dead silent. The cabinet officials didn’t dare breathe.

Norman was not finished. She pointed directly at Darien, “Mother’s will has been confirmed by Central Brain. You are trying to overturn it now. Does that mean you intend to rebel?”

A six-year-old child, and the word “rebel” landed with perfect, deliberate clarity.

Darien’s genial mask shattered. His face twisted through shades of white and red. He pointed a trembling finger at Norman. “You-you insolent little-I am your uncle!”

“I am the crown heir.” Norman didn’t back down an inch. “You should be kneeling to me.”
