Margaret raised an eyebrow at Cheiron. “Three hours?”

Cheiron cleared his throat and shut off his Holo-bracelet without a flicker of expression. “I got stuck in conventional thinking, that’s all.”

Tyrone let out a snort and clapped Quentin on the shoulder. “Quentin, that method of yours-cutting the whole thing loose at the base. Bold. And it didn’t fall out on the way back?”

Quentin’s face stayed blank. He walked to the corner without a word.

Margaret had just set Norman down.

“My Lady!”

The front door burst open and a golden blur swept in on a gust of warm air. Timothy crossed the courtyard in three bounding strides, his blue eyes blazing, and launched himself straight at Margaret.

She caught him on reflex. He smelled of sun and clean air, his shaggy golden hair brushing against the curve of her neck as he pressed in as close as physically possible.

“I got it done!” He pulled an electronic document stamped with the military’s red wax seal from inside his jacket and held it up in front of her.

Margaret took the file, scanned it, and nodded. “Good work.”

Timothy’s eyes brightened even further. He pushed his luck and rested his chin on her shoulder. “Do you have a reward for me? I rushed back to see you. Didn’t even stop for water.”

A glass of lemon water appeared at Timothy’s elbow. Cheiron stood beside them, his voice perfectly warm and utterly unassailable. “You’ve been working hard. Have some water. It’ll help.”

Timothy’s body went rigid. His brow furrowed, and he shot Cheiron a fierce glare.

“I’m not thirsty.” He didn’t take the glass. Instead, he tightened his arms around Margaret, his voice dropping into something softer, edged with complaint. “My Lady, my wrist hurts. From signing all those documents.”

Cheiron’s gray eyes darkened slightly, but the curve of his mouth never shifted. “Would you like me to take a look? Central Hospital’s orthopedic facilities are excellent, and I happen to have no appointments this afternoon.”

“No need to trouble yourself, Mr. Jewett.” Timothy was practically grinding his teeth, his voice jumping half an octave,

Margaret exhaled, reached up, and ran her fingers through Timothy’s golden hair, smoothing it down twice. “Alright. I’ll make sure you get your reward. Whatever you want-we’ll discuss it after the coronation.”

Timothy was instantly placated. He shot Cheiron a smug look, released his hold, and stood up straight.

Cheiron withdrew the glass, lowering his eyes, his lashes veiling whatever moved beneath them. Margaret

favored softness over force. Timothy’s blatant displays of affection worked. That much was clear. But Cheiron had patience. He had plenty of it.

For three days, Darien had replayed the scene in his mind: Margaret standing on the coronation platform before the eyes of the entire galaxy, with no crown to present. It was going to be magnificent.

He stepped out of the elevator with half a glass of his finest vintage, thoroughly pleased with the world. Craig followed behind, leaning on his cane. The two of them were heading to the central vault for a routine inspection—and to admire the very crown that would put Margaret in a stranglehold.

“Your Highness.” The Guards Battalion soldiers flanking the corridor snapped to attention.

Darien waved them off and approached the massive alloy blast door. He entered the passcode and submitted to the retinal scan. The airlock depressurized with a low hiss, and the heavy metal doors slid slowly apart.

Darien walked in, wine glass in hand. The smile on his face froze the moment his eyes registered the vault’s interior.

The climate-controlled display pedestal stood empty.

No crown. No blast-proof case. Just a severed metal base lying on the floor, its cut edge smooth as a mirror, gleaming under the cold white lights.
