Norman crunched the candy in her mouth, the sound sharp and loud in the quiet room. She glanced at Margaret, then at Cheiron. The little girl didn’t really understand what they were discussing, but she felt a swell of pride.
Margaret is amazing, commanding even the usually cold Mr. Jewett with such ease.
Opening her eyes, Margaret sat up and activated the holographic display on her wrist.
“Just keeping an eye on the Empire isn’t enough,” she said, fingers dancing across the screen to access an encrypted channel. “With this sudden shift in power, those three old vultures are panicking. They’ll definitely reach out to their Federal counterparts to strategize.”
The connection was soon established,
Baar’s imposing face flickered into view, a holographic projection hovering in the air. He wore the black fatigues of the Federal Military, collar slightly open, Raucous background noise-likely from a training ground-filtered through.
“Looking for me?” Baar raised an eyebrow, his gold eyes fixed unblinkingly on Margaret through the screen. His tone was brusque, but a careful listener could detect a faint, pleased lilt at the end.
“Got a job for you, Commander Iverson.” Margaret propped her chin on her hand, wiggling her fingers at him. “Need you to put three people under surveillance. Federal Senators: Martin Moss, Lucas Summers, and… what’s his name… right, George Green. Full-spectrum monitoring of their communications and private accounts, especially for any encrypted traffic from the Empire in the coming days.”
Baar frowned. “Those three have deep roots. You’re planning to move against them?”
“Not planning. They owe a debt, and it’s time to collect.” Margaret had no intention of detailing Operation Harvest over an open line. “I’ve just put the screws to three of their Imperial partners. Once they start comparing notes, you’ll intercept the evidence.”
A low chuckle escaped Baar. He tapped the desk with his knuckles. “Fine. I’ll handle it. But unauthorized surveillance on Federal Senators is a high-risk game. Smells like a bit of favoritism, doesn’t it?”
Margaret stated without a shred of guilt, “Absolutely it is. You’re my man. What’s wrong with doing a little off-the-books work for your wife? If the Federal Military Council complains, blame me. Say the Imperial Regent forced you into it,”
The endearment visibly pleased him. He snorted, but the smile spreading across his face was unmistakable,
“Glad you remember that, Watch your back over there. The Imperial nobility plays dirty. If Aegis Squad isn’t enough, I’ll send two more platoons,” he said, his hand reaching out to trace the edge of the screen in a surprisingly tender gesture,
“Plenty for now, See you when you get home,”
The call ended. Margaret stretched, a languid movement that eased the tension in her shoulders.
She orchestrated everything with fluid efficiency, effortlessly wielding Baar-the Federation’s sharpest

weapon. Cheiron arched a brow, masking the complex emotions churning beneath his calm exterior.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Margaret turned her head, catching his gaze before he could fully
look away.
“Nothing.” Cheiron set down his glass, his tone neutral. “Just marveling at how smoothly you’ve gotten us all dancing to your tune.”
Margaret grinned. “Got a problem with that, Lord Jewett? Problem noted, but dismissed. I consider you all family. Why let a perfectly good family go to waste?”
“Not a problem at all.” Cheiron’s voice softened. “The honor is mine.”

The hovercar settled before the villa’s entrance.
No sooner had she stepped inside than Timothy’s tall frame practically launched itself at her. Dressed in a casual button-down, he moved with swift precision, smoothly inserting himself between Margaret and Cheiron.
“My Lady, you’re back! Did those Cabinet fossils give you any trouble?” His bright blue eyes sparkled as he spoke, already taking the coat she shrugged off, “I had the chef try a new recipe today. Saved you a portion. Come try it.”
