Chapter 262 Picking Up The Pieces
Chapter 262 Picking Up The Pieces
A headache pulsed at her temples. Margaret pinched the bridge of her nose, releasing a long, weary sigh.
“Well, at least the Empire was generous with those three housing allotments after the last spiritual power
assessment.”
A note of genuine irritation colored her internal monologue. “This one’s toast, thanks to that old lunatic. Thank goodness for the two backups.”
She turned to Tyrone. “Contact Irene immediately. Have her check on those other two properties first thing tomorrow. See if they’ve been seized.”
Slapping the vehicle’s door frame in annoyance, she added, “If they are, tell her to use my authority and get them released. No one touches my assets.”
Tyrone’s resilience was something else. He’d already bounced back to his usual smiling self. “Got it. Ms. Greene. You won’t lose a single one.”
His fingers danced over his Holo-bracelet, sending the instructions to Irene. “With Darien’s fall, the old guard faction is headless. The real showdown will be at tomorrow morning’s Cabinet session.”
Timothy sidled up, his eyes bright with a hint of mischievous scheming. “So, My Lady, where are we crashing tonight? How about we…”
She reached out and ruffled his blond hair roughly. “We’ll make do at one of your family’s hotels for now. Book the penthouse suite.”
A yawn escaped her, bringing tears to the corners of her eyes. “Let’s go. I’m dead on my feet after all that.”
Pulling the car door open, she paused. “Oh, and leave a message for Cheiron at the Academy of Sciences. He’s probably pulling another all-nighter.
“Don’t want him coming home all cheerful tomorrow morning to a pile of rubble, thinking we all got blown to kingdom come.”
Tyrone’s smile deepened. “Right. I’ll send him our coordinates.”
They piled into the vehicle.
It pulled away smoothly, heading back toward the city lights.
Silence settled inside the car.
Norman slept soundly, Timothy carefully cushioning her head against any jostling.
Tyrone, in the driver’s seat with autopilot engaged, was already managing the fallout.
Margaret rested her head against the seatback, watching the night scenery blur past.
The lethal decisiveness faded, leaving behind a deep weariness.
Her gaze drifted to Timothy beside her, then to Tyrone in front.

Her mind replayed the moment the orbital strike hit-the instant these males had thrown themselves over her without hesitation, using their own bodies as a shield.
At that moment, they hadn’t known about the protective barrier.
They had been fully prepared to trade their lives for hers.
The night deepened.
In the penthouse suite of the Hurst Group’s interstellar hotel, Margaret lay in bed after a hot shower, dressed in a soft robe. Yet sleep eluded her.
Tonight’s events had unfolded too fast.
Darien’s desperate gambit was expected, but the raw power of the orbital cannon had left a chill in its wake.
Without that barrier, they truly would have been finished.
“Host… wahh… Can we please not play for stakes this high anymore? My code nearly fragmented! For a second there, I thought we were about to be atomized!” Primo’s electronic voice chimed in her mind, still trembling slightly.
As she heard its tearful tone, Margaret’s heart softened. “What’s there to be afraid of?”
She sighed, her mental voice uncharacteristically gentle, “We pulled through today, thanks to you. If you hadn’t pushed me to get that barrier, we’d be done for. Primo, you’re the MVP here.”
“R-Really?” Primo’s voice hitched, a note of pride quickly mixing in.
“Absolutely. We couldn’t have done it without you.” Margaret closed her eyes, a faint smile touching her lips. “Don’t be scared. Darien will be dead by morning. From now on, with me here, no one touches us. Once the Terminus Planet situation is wrapped up, we’ll tour the galaxy and rake in the points! Then we’ll drag that lazy main system out of hibernation and get you a taste-sharing module!”
“Host, you’re the best!”
Finally soothed and brimming with a newfound sense of security, Primo quieted down.
