Before, Primo had always been chattering away in her head, so as far as Margaret was concerned, the two of them were a package deal. But back there, for a little while, she’d really been alone with Cheiron. Just the two of them.
“Primo.”
“Right here, host!” Primo’s voice buzzed with excitement. “How’d it go? Was the test smooth? Did it hurt?”
“Didn’t feel a thing. Just stood there spacing out for five minutes.”
‘Heh. So? Was it the 35 class?”
Margaret hummed a yes in her head.
“Whoa!” Primo let out an over-the-top yell. “A 3S-class female. The only one in the whole universe! Host, you’re amazing! Now I can go around bragging that my host is a 35 class!”
Margaret’s lips curved up despite herself. She hadn’t gotten any reaction back in the testing room, but Primo was making up for it. And the funny thing was, Primo had known all along that she was 35 class. Yet here it was acting like some wide eyed bystander hearing the news for the first time.
Margaret filled Primo in on the rest of the test, including how chill the two researchers had been.
Primo thought about it and said, “That makes sense, though. Your spiritual power is way above S class, so the Central Brain probably already had an idea. Those researchers were likely tipped off beforehand.”
Margaret raised an eyebrow. “So you’re saying they already knew I was 35 class?”
“More or less,” Primo said. “Even if they didn’t know the exact level, they knew you were at least $ class or higher. So a 35 result today wasn’t exactly out of left field. No need to lose their minds over it.”
Margaret nodded. Fair point.
“So what’s next?” she asked, a hint of anticipation in her voice.
Primo’s tone got a bit more serious. “Next, your test results should hit your Holo-bracelet as an email sometime this afternoon. The subsidy rates, housing policies, all of that will be explained in the email. And then… matching.”
The word “matching” made Margaret frown.
Primo kept going. “Your info will be entered into the matching system. Eligible males will automatically go into the candidate pool. They’ll probably push the matching process pretty fast. I mean, you’re the only 38-class female out there, and those 38-class males have been waiting forever.”
these ifs-class
Margaret went quiet. She knew it was just how this world worked, but still, the idea of being “matched” rubbed her the wrong way. She couldn’t quite put her finger on why,
“And once your rank is officially released, the Empire will put out a public announcement. The whole Interstellar Era is gonna know that a 35-class female has been born. The forums are gonna explode, All those posts praising Phoebe? They’re gonna get buried under posts about you in no time!”

Margaret smiled. Now that was good news.

But the smile faded into a weird kind of nervousness. Not the scared kind. Just something she couldn’t name. She’d spent so many years as a nobody, a tool for other people. Growing up in an orphanage, getting bullied at school, and being a doormat in some book. No one had ever paid her any attention. And now suddenly she was supposed to be the center of the universe. Everyone was going to be talking about her. It threw her for a loop.
“Host, what’s wrong?” Primo’s voice came through, soft with concern.
Margaret shook off her thoughts. “Nothing.”
Primo paused for a second, then spoke again, gentler than usual. “Host, it’s okay. No matter what happens, I will always be here with you.”
Margaret blinked, then let out a small laugh and swore at it in her head. “You always fall back on that same line. You’ve said it like a million times already.”
“But it’s true that I’ll always be here with you,” Primo said, dead serious. “That’s not me blowing smoke. That’s just facts.”
Margaret didn’t say anything, but the smile stayed on her face.
