Margaret let out a noncommittal “minhm” and figured her memory wasn’t quite that terrible.

Then Cheiron looked back at her again, and for once, that typically unreadable face of his actually showed a hint of mischief in his eyes. “Just try not to accidentally walk into the psych counseling office this time.”

With that parting shot, his floor arrived, the elevator doors whisked open, and he strode out without looking back, leaving Margaret rooted to the spot.

Why did he always deliver jokes like he was reading a grocery list? It was unsettling.

Cheiron’s office wasn’t hard to find. Margaret followed her memory down that long hallway and pushed open the familiar door. It wasn’t locked.

The office looked the same as before. A desk, a couch, a giant floor-to-ceiling window.

Margaret walked over to the window and looked out at the view. From this angle, she could see the whole central district of the Prime Planer laid out in front of her. All those weirdly shaped buildings, all those hover cars zipping back and forth, all those orderly flight lanes crisscrossing overhead. It looked like a three-dimensional painting coming to life.

“Cheiron’s pretty low key, isn’t he?” Primo’s voice popped up in her head, sounding thoughtful.

“What do you mean?” Margaret asked casually.

“Look at this office. The guy’s a 3S-class elite, and there’s not a single fancy decoration in here.”

“Maybe he just doesn’t care about that stuff,” Margaret asked again.

“True. His house is the same way. Fancy exterior, but the inside is really understated.” Primo kept analyzing. “What does that tell you? It tells you this guy is practical. He’s not vain. He’s husband material.”

Margaret sensed where this was going and didn’t respond.

“So, what do you think of him?” Primo’s voice took on a sly edge.

Margaret knew Primo was full of it. She rolled her eyes and was about to answer when a knock sounded at the door.

Margaret froze and looked back at the door. It was cracked open, but from where she was standing, she couldn’t see who was outside,

Who would be coming to Cheiron’s office right now?

She hesitated and didn’t make a sound. Maybe whoever it was would knock a few times. get no answer, and leave.

Knock knock knock.

Three more knocks, louder this time.

Margaret’s brow furrowed. Why wouldn’t this person just give up? And Cheiron’s office had a signal

Margaret took a deep breath. Fine, she’d open it. It wasn’t like she was doing anything wrong. Cheiron had told her to wait here.

She walked to the door and pulled it open.

Then she froze,

Two people stood in the hallway. One was Phoebe, wearing her pale pink dress, her long silky hair draped over her shoulders, her face wearing that signature sweet and gentle expression. The other was a tall guy with wild red hair. It was Ardon.

The second Margaret saw them, the disgust on her face was plain as day.

Why these two? What do they want?

Phoebe’s eyes went wide. That gentle face of hers flickered with something like disbelief for just a second. before smoothing back to normal. Her gaze swept over Margaret, then drifted past her into the office, like she was checking something.

Ardon’s reaction was way more direct. He stared for a second, then his brow furrowed hard, and his eyes. filled with pure, unmasked disgust.

“Margaret?” His voice was thick with disbelief. “What are you doing here?”

Margaret looked at him, her lip twitching. She wanted to ask him the same thing.

But before she could get a word out, Ardon kept going.

“Right, I remember now.” His tone turned nasty, his eyes crawling up and down Margaret like she was something stuck to the bottom of his shoe. “Ms. James told me you work as a cleaner at Mr. Jewett’s place. What, you followed him here to do the hospital’s cleaning too?”
