Margaret said. “Protect me? How exactly are you going to do that?”

“My Lady! I’m SSS-class!” Timothy tossed the fox pillow onto the sofa and threw himself down after it. “I’m not leaving. You can beat me to death right here-I’m still sleeping in this room.”

Margaret rubbed her temples. Once he got like this, nothing could shake him. She glanced at the digital clock on the wall. Nearly midnight. She didn’t have the energy for a fight. {1

“Fine.” She pointed at the oversized leather sofa. “You sleep there. No snoring. No grinding your teeth. And most important-do not climb into my bed.”

Timothy nodded rapidly, pulled a blanket up to his chin, and left only his blue eyes peeking out.

“Goodnight, My Lady.”

In the room at the end of the hall, Cheiron wasn’t sleeping.

He sat in front of a holographic display, his fingers flying across the virtual keyboard. On the screen was the Starnet post exposing Phoebe’s banned stimulant use.

The replies had surged past twenty thousand. At midnight, the poster had updated with more details- specific side effects, purchase timelines. They still hadn’t named Phoebe directly, but at this point, the accusation was as good as confirmed.

Cheiron stared at the words on the screen. Banned spiritual power drugs. The term struck a nerve, dragging up memories he’d buried for years.

His mother had been a C-class female. Desperate to measure up to his S-class father, she’d volunteered for an underground spiritual power enhancement trial.

The drug could spike spiritual power in a matter of days. The cost was her lifespan. It burned through her until her spiritual realm collapsed. He’d watched her choke out her last breath in agony.

After that, he’d sworn off those drugs for good. The first thing he did after taking over Central Hospital was join forces with the Federal Military to wipe out three underground labs manufacturing them.

The poster had masked their IP behind layers of encrypted virtual networks. Cheiron tried to trace it, but whoever was on the other end was a skilled hacker with airtight counter-surveillance.

He closed the browser. His mind went back to what Margaret had hinted at before-that something was off about Phoebe’s spiritual power. Put together with what she’d told him, something about this whole thing reeked.

How did Margaret see through it? What does she know?

Cheiron stood, straightened his collar, and walked out of his room.

He stopped at Margaret’s door and knocked three times.

Margaret was just about to turn off the lights when the knocking jolted her. She threw off the covers, shuffled into her slippers, and yanked the door open.

Cheiron stood outside. He opened his mouth to speak, but his gaze drifted past Margaret’s shoulder and into the room.

Timothy had somehow relocated from the sofa to the bed. He lay on his side, propped up on one elbow, his silk pajama top unbuttoned far enough to show off a generous expanse of chest. His golden hair was artfully mussed, and his blue eyes stared right past Margaret at Cheiron.

He pitched his voice low, rough with fake sleep. “My Lady, who is it? It’s the middle of the night. Some of us are trying to sleep.”

Cheiron’s composure was legendary. Timothy’s childish stunts usually rolled right off him.

But tonight, watching Timothy sprawled across Margaret’s bed like he owned the place, Cheiron’s breath stopped for a full second. D

Margaret followed Cheiron’s gaze over her shoulder and spotted Timothy on the bed. Her eye twitched.

When the hell did he get up there? And what’s with the “come and get me” pose?

“Shut up.” Margaret shot Timothy a glare.

Timothy pouted, pulled the blanket over half his face, and kept his eyes locked on Cheiron.

Margaret turned back to Cheiron. “You’re knocking at my door this late. Something you need?”

Cheiron tore his gaze back to her face. “The post on Starnet. I wanted to discuss a few things with you.”

Margaret leaned against the doorframe and yawned. “Discuss a post at this hour?”
