Scarlett’s POV

The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the silence. It was too quiet. I also didn’t feel Lucien’s presence; he usually wrapped his arms around me like a living octopus. This time, I was free from his clinginess.
A low groan escaped my lips as I dragged my hand to my temple, rubbing it in a circular motion. My head throbbed a little, which, as usual, was the result of the previous evening–not entirely sober and warmed by the small, heated atmosphere last night that… I didn’t want to think about.
I blinked my eyes open and wasn’t surprised to find the bed beside me empty–after all, I’d already noticed Lucien wasn’t here. I glanced at the sheets, which had already been changed to clean linen rather than the mess of tangles and sweat Lucien and I had left behind. My cheeks heated instantly.
After all, he was the only one who would do this after our deed, since he still had the stamina to move while I was already lying on the bed–either unconscious or asleep.
My eyes then trailed to my nightdress, which clung softly to me. I was currently wearing it, but I remembered clearly that this wasn’t what I had worn last night—the one Lucien had taken off and tossed goddess knows where.
It seemed he had cleaned me up, changed the bedding, and dressed me so that I wouldn’t feel sticky and uncomfortable when I woke up.
The soreness between my thighs was the only lingering evidence of our passion. My pearl ached with a dull throb, but compared to the first time and the other times except last night, this time it was manageable because, for the first time, he’d shown me mercy and had stopped after only one round.
A strange flutter rose in my chest, tightening my throat. He’d taken care of me while I slept. Thoroughly. I pressed my palm to my heart, trying to calm its beating.
The corner of my lips curled as I smiled, shaking my head a moment later.
But where was he?
His absence made the bed seem larger than ever. I rolled out of bed, set my feet on the freshly polished floor, and pulled on a shawl that was draped over a chair. My body still carried the heaviness of the night before, and I pulled myself out of the room.
The halls of the Nightshade pack were alive with voices. Laughter rang out from the lower floor as warriors teased each other; some had already returned to their posts after resting the whole day yesterday, and there was also a faint clatter of dishes coming from the kitchen.
Suddenly, I felt hungry, my stomach making strange noises, which reminded me that I had eaten very little–not even before the ceremony.
Before I could take another step toward the kitchen, a familiar voice called out to me.
“Scarlett–I mean Luna!”
Even without looking, I already knew who it was.

I turned just in time to see Kathleen waving me over, her silver hair bouncing as she strode towards me. She was still in conversation with one of the warriors, but the moment her eyes landed on me, she abandoned him without hesitation, leaving me feeling a bit helpless.
“Just call me Scarlett. Why are you calling me Luna now?” I blinked at her.
Kathleen chuckled. “You’re already the Luna. If I still call you Scarlett, that would be disrespectful. Besides, I have to set a good example for everyone.”
I rolled my eyes. “Even when you didn’t call me Luna before, they already did–even though Lucien hasn’t announced to everyone that I’m their Luna.”
Kathleen just laughed and linked her arm through mine, pulling me toward the kitchen. “That’s because you’re the only woman he’s ever brought back to the pack and he was never interested in personal affairs before. That’s why everyone already knew that, sooner or later, you’d be his Luna.”
I sighed helplessly. “And how did you know I’m hungry, hm?”
“Changing the topic, I see,” she teased, but she still answered. “Well, your Alpha instructed me that if you woke up, I should drag you straight here since you haven’t eaten yet and you’re probably starving. I promised him you’d eat before you did anything else. So here we are.”
I blinked at her, still trying to process everything. “He said all that?”
“Of course. Do you think your Alpha wouldn’t give detailed instructions about your welfare? We’ve all seen how much he cares for you two lovebirds.” Kathleen smiled, evidently enjoying my reaction. “I should start charging him for babysitting.”
I rolled my eyes, but a little smile tugged at my lips. “Babysitter, my ass.”
“Yep, our Luna, as long as you’re happy.” She replied playfully, giving my arm a squeeze. “Come on, food first. You look like you’re about to faint. Did he keep you up all night or something?”
My face burned instantly. “Kathleen!”
Her grin widened like a cat catching a mouse. “Ohhh. That answers that.”
I slapped her arm in protest, horrified, but she just laughed even more, and I followed her into the kitchen. The aroma of roasted meat, herbs, and freshly baked bread wrapped around us like a warm blanket. A few cooks were bustling about, but one of them stopped, bowed hastily, and rushed away to get a tray ready at Kathleen’s signal.
We waited as I leaned against the counter, trying to calm myself down. Inevitably, my curiosity got the better of me.
“Where’s Lucien?”
Kathleen arched a brow; her playful grin faded and was replaced by a serious expression. “He’s with Alpha Draco.”
Oh. That was why she turned serious so suddenly. Did she finally remember him? She wouldn’t act this way otherwise.
It was Alpha Draco who was said to have come to visit the pack to pledge his alliance with Nightshade’s

Alpha and negotiate something.
Alpha Draco–the Alpha of Ironfang Pack. The wealthiest pack in the entire county.
“I see. The Alpha of Ironfang,” I said, nodding.
“The very one,” she replied. “They’re talking about an alliance.”

I nodded again. I already knew about this since that was what Draco had said during the ceremony, but, as far as I knew, alliances didn’t come together in a day.
“Already? I thought negotiations like that took weeks, even months.”
Kathleen sighed and crossed her arms. “Usually, yes. But Draco seems eager to speed things along.”
I tilted my head, picking up on her tone. “Eager? Why?”
She pressed her lips together, as if deciding whether to tell me or not. Finally, she sighed again. “Because, apparently, he also wants to talk to Lucien about… me.”
I blinked, stunned. “You?”
It seemed that night, after Lucien took me away, leaving them at the banquet, the two of them had the chance to meet or talk. Who knows what else happened or what they discussed.
She gave me a wry look. “Yes. Me. Don’t look so surprised.”
“I’m not surprised,” I said quickly, shaking my head. “Just… confused. What does he want?” I tried to act ignorant.
After all, what Lucien and I had talked about last night was just a suspicion based on instinct, without proof. We didn’t know if he really was the one Kathleen spent the night with, but even though it was just our guess, we had a strong feeling we were right.
