Scarlett’s POV

Kathleen lifted both hands in exasperation. “I said no, obviously! I told him I don’t want to settle down, I don’t want a mate, and I definitely don’t want to get married to someone I barely know. But does he listen? No. He insists he’s not going to give up. Says he just wants to get to know me, spend time with me, and see where it goes. Honestly, Scarlett, I’m this close to pulling my hair out.”

She pinched her fingers together for emphasis, then slumped against the counter beside me.

For a moment, I was too shocked to respond. Then, quietly, I asked, “And how do you feel about it?”

Kathleen shrugged her shoulders before looking away. “I don’t know. Part of me thinks he’s insane. Another part… I don’t know. Maybe I’m too tired to deal with it. I would like to be free, not to be tied down. And yet–he’s relentless.”

I bit my lip, not knowing what to say to her. Kathleen had always been outspoken, fiery, stubborn. It made me feel uneasy seeing her actually in conflict.

But I didn’t want her to regret any decisions she made. After all, two days is too short to get to know someone, especially when we’re talking about marriage, which is sacred.

Even Lucien and I hadn’t done that yet because we wanted to take it slow.

I let out a heavy sigh. “Just don’t make a hasty decision. If you like him, then go for it. If you’re still hesitant, then don’t rush it. Besides, you all have the time in the world, so why decide so early?”

The corner of her lips rose as she nodded her head, clearly in favor of my idea. “That’s what I think too. Honestly, I can’t imagine myself loving someone romantically.”

I chuckled. “You’ll cross that bridge when you get there.”

She chuckled, then returned a mischievous grin. “Forget about me for a moment–how about you? Did you enjoy last night?”

My whole body went stiff. “Kathleen-”

“Don’t even try to deny it.” She leaned in close, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “I can tell from the way you’re blushing. So? Was it everything you dreamed of?”

I rolled my eyes despite the heat on my cheeks and pushed her face away. “Shut it.”

She was about to say more, when the cook came in with a tray of dishes, sparing me from her incessant teasing. After all, I, too, wanted to gossip about what that Alpha Draco had been talking to her about and what he might do in the future, or if there was a chance for him to get into her heart, but since the food was here, my attention focused on it instead.

“Here you go, Luna,” the woman said respectfully, a soft smile on her face as she set the plates on the table. I thanked her, and the scent rose at once–savory roasted meat glazed with herbs, garlic butter vegetables, a steaming bowl of rice, and fresh bread still warm from the oven.

My stomach growled audibly. Kathleen smirked. “See? Even your body says eat.”

“Of course, I’ll eat now. After all, I’m this hungry, so what else should I do except eat?” I groaned and dropped into the chair, while the cook bowed, excused herself, and went to get the drinks.

Kathleen plopped down across from me without hesitation.

“I’ll eat with you,” she declared, scooping the steaming bowl of rice. “No way I’m letting you dine alone— with these fine meals.”

“Go ahead and help me finish this food. It’s bad to waste it, you know,” I said, amused.

We clasped our hands in thanks before digging in. I scooped a bite of the roasted meat onto my plate and cut it into small pieces. The aroma should’ve been mouthwatering, but the moment I brought the fork close to my lips and my tongue gently licked the meat, something twisted deep in my gut.

The sweet and mouthwatering aroma suddenly became overwhelming and nauseating for me. My stomach turned upside down.

I froze, the fork halfway to my mouth.

Kathleen paused from scooping, her brows furrowing as she noticed something was wrong with me.

“What’s wrong?” I heard her ask.

“I… don’t know either.” I dropped the fork and forced myself to swallow against the wave of nausea.

Kathleen jumped up, anxiety plastered on her face. “Is it bad? Did they season it wrong, or use expired meat?”

Before I could answer, the cook returned with a pitcher of water and noticed my pale face. “Luna? Is there something wrong with the food? I made sure to cook it right. Also, we’ve been using fresh ingredients.”

The nausea grew unbearable. I hurriedly accepted the pitcher and glass, poured water, and drank quickly to ease the nausea.

I shook my head. “It’s nothing. Maybe the taste isn’t suited for me.”

I tried to take another bite, this time of vegetable. I waited for the nausea to come but it didn’t, which made me sigh in relief as I looked at them with a smile.

“It’s nothing. Maybe it’s just the meat this time.”

“Really?” Kathleen seemed suspicious and took a piece of the meat I’d cut earlier, then ate it.

“How is it?” I asked, watching her chew and swallow.

She shook her head. “It’s delicious for me. There’s no problem with the meat.”

I couldn’t help but frown. Really?

I sliced another piece, this time with butter on it, and ate it directly. However, my stomach instantly revolted.

I pressed a hand over my mouth, jumped out of the chair, and ran to the sink. My body convulsed as I vomited everything I’d eaten last night, forcing it back up. The sour taste burned my throat and tears

“Scarlett!” Kathleen rushed to me, rubbing my back, her voice full of panic. “What’s happening? Are you

sick?”

The cook paled, fidgeting nervously. “Oh dear, oh dear…”

I spat, rinsed my mouth with water, and leaned heavily against the sink, gasping for air. My stomach still twisted, as though rejecting even the thought of food.

“I–I don’t know,” I managed weakly. “Maybe it’s just… because the food was too heavy after not eating yesterday. That’s why I felt this way.”

Kathleen’s brows drew together, clearly unconvinced.

The cook then hesitated before speaking in a hushed, almost fearful tone. “Luna… forgive me for jumping to conclusions, but… is it possible that you might be bearing a child?”

Both Kathleen and I froze, staring at the woman as if she had sprouted horns.

Kathleen was the first to recover. “What did you just say?”

“With… with child,” the cook stammered nervously. “Pregnant.”

Kathleen’s mouth fell open. She turned slowly to me, her eyes as big as the plate.

How could that be possible? I shook my head furiously. “No. No, that’s not-” My protest died in my throat. Memories of last night—no, the past several nights–flooded back. Lucien’s touch, his lips, the way neither of us held back.

Besides… he had always spilled his seed inside me after we finished.

Heat flushed all the way up my face.

Kathleen gasped loudly, covering her mouth. “Scarlett! You don’t mean—”

“I don’t know!” I blurted, panicked.

The cook wrung her hands tighter. “It would explain the sudden sickness. The way food smells too strong, the nausea, the vomiting… These are common signs, Luna.”

Kathleen nearly shrieked. “Oh my goddess, you’re pregnant!”

“Don’t say that!” I snapped, though my voice shook. My heart thundered in my chest. Pregnant? Me? Now?

Kathleen grabbed my shoulders and shook me lightly, her expression a mix of excitement and terror. “Do you realize what this means?!”

“I realize I might be throwing up because of bad seasoning!” I argued desperately.

But even as the words left me, doubt clawed at my chest. It hadn’t been bad seasoning. The food wasn’t spoiled. It was me.

Kathleen released me abruptly and spun toward the doorway. “We need the physician. Right now.”
