After the ambush earlier, and after my beta went to great lengths to fix the front tires, I glanced at Scarlett. She was fighting sleep, brows furrowed, eyes sharp and alert–watching the road like she was ready to spring into action if another rogue showed up.
It was…a sight to see.
Eventually, exhaustion won. Her head dipped, eyes slipping shut as she leaned against the window. Each time the car hit even the smallest bump, her head thudded against the door, and my jaw tightened.
“Drive slower,” I said, voice cold as I shot my beta a look.
I reached over, steadying her before guiding her head onto my shoulder, letting it rest there–letting her use me as her pillow.
Whenever I tried to think about the ambush earlier–every slight detail that they show could lead to any evidence and point the one who paid them to ambush us–my gaze would drift to the Luna who was sleeping peacefully next to me.
She was breathing lightly–different from the woman who held her high up despite the rumours, the gossips, and despite Alexander flaunting his mistress to everyone in the pack and she didn’t let that break her.
However, now she’s by my side–she showed a rare gentleness and the bars she had raised, had slowly disappeared.
As expected of the wolf who had trained secretly in the rogue’s forest seven years ago, whose posture were incorrect and she was just swinging randomly–can now fought alongside an Alpha.
Scarlett Winter.
What a woman you are.
Most Luna I’d met had been praised for their obedience to their Alpha–and Scarlett was different.
She was the type who would wield her sword, fight in the battle, and easily leave a situation that no longer serves her.
She could easily adapt to things.
Just like how she could easily adapt to my teaching seven years ago. I just pointed it out and corrected her–yet she could easily master it.
What a dangerous Luna.
And she was the kind of Luna I’m exactly looking for.
I turned my gaze back to the road, thinking about the rogues that ambushed us. I had a lot of enemies–but I know that it wasn’t just me that they targeted, also the Luna.
Trained rogues were hard to tame, manipulate, and even command. There were even fewer of them than ordinary rogues, that is why trained rogues were usually prized higher if someone would seek them out.
That means that someone paid them higher–someone who can afford them. They invited not just their money, but also their time and effort to hide it from the council.
Was it Alexander?

I can’t be for sure. He was not that strong enough to organize a large–scale attack on us–but I won’t eliminate him from the suspect list.
But if it were really him, trying to harm Scarlett and I, to remove his obstacles so that he and his mistress can enjoy their life peacefully–let’s see what else he could do about it.
Ambition makes men reckless.
Fear makes them stupid.
Alexander had both in lethal doses.
If he wanted a war—
He had chosen his battlefield poorly.
Because for the first time in years, I was interested in fighting one.
By the time we reached Nightshade, dusk had already settled in
glanced at Scarlett, still asleep, and couldn’t bring myself to interrupt whatever sweet dream she’d fallen into.
unbuckled her and slid my arms under her. She stirred only slightly, instinctively curling toward warmth.
Her body knew me even if her mind still hated me.
The corner of my lips raised.
lifted her from the car, sweeping her up into my arms in a bridal carry, careful and slow, doing everything I could not to wake her.
As I walked in my territory, the security posts recognized me already and were about to greet me like they used to–1
ignaled them using my eyes, making them pause as their loud voices immediately quieted down especially when their eyes fell onto the woman I was holding, making me nod my head in satisfaction at how intelligent they were.
When I reached my room, I gently laid her down on my bed, and for a moment, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her.
Such a precious Luna–yet Alexander tossed her aside so easily.
But because of him, she ended up here. With me.
She’s useful to me.
And valuable.
Something Alexander can’t even recognize is the difference between stone and diamonds.
I brushed a strand of hair from her forehead, then forced myself to step back.
Remembering the conditions she set for our contract, the corner of my lips raised.
Autonomy huh.
With such a tempting offering, how could I afford to mess up?
My eyes fell onto the guard who was standing near my room.
