Scarlett

The ground shuddered violently beneath my feet, the shockwave slamming into us like a raging beast. My ears rang so sharply it felt as though something inside then had shattered, leaving behind nothing but a high–pitched screech.

Heat rushed past me, scorching the air, followed by the violent rush of wind and debris. I couldn’t see it–buy I could feel it. The pressure crushed against my chest, stealing the breath from my lungs as Lucien tightened his hold, shielding me without hesitation.

“Fuck!” I heard Lucien cursed. “She denoted herself!”

“Damn! Alpha! Luna!” Arnold’s voice filled with worry as he rushed towards our direction. “Are you both okay?”

I gently patted Lucien’s chest, feeling the uneven tremor beneath my palm. His arm was still locked around my waist, stiff as if he hadn’t realized the danger had already passed. I lifted my hand and traced his cheek, grounding him.

“I’m fine.” I said softly. “You protected me. That’s why nothing happened to me”

Only then did his breath stutter.

I turned my head slightly toward Arnold’s direction and gave a small nod. “I’m fine. Can you check if Lucien is injured too?”

“O–Okay, Luna.” Arnold moved closer. I could hear the scrape of his boots, the pause as he inspected Lucien carefully.

“T… there are no visible wounds on the Alpha.”

Relief flooded my chest, warm and dizzying. I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.

But Arnold’s voice–his hesitation–made my brows knit together.

“Why are you nervous?” I asked quietly.

His breath hitched. “I… because I failed the Alpha and Luna.” His voice was heavy, tight with self–reproach. “I never thought there would be a bomb hidden inside her body. She waited until you both came before triggering it.”

He clenched his jaw. “If I had checked her more thoroughly–if I hadn’t assumed poison was the only threat-

I shook my head. “This isn’t your fault.”

My fingers tightened slightly against Lucien’s sleeve. “Just like you said, you didn’t know. The bomb implanted in her body most likely came from the North. Their technology is far more advanced than ours. Even we wouldn’t expect something like that.”

“Fuck…” Arnold muttered, the word torn from him raw and bitter.

I could hear another presence beside him–Nick. I felt it in the way the air shifted, heard it in the soft sound of a hand landing against Arnold’s back.

“Is Nick injured?” I asked immediately. “Are either of you hurt?”

“No.” Arnold exhaled shakily. “Nick reacted fast. He dragged me away in time. Otherwise, I would’ve been caught in the blast

too.”

Silence followed.

Lucien’s arm finally loosened, though he didn’t let go of me entirely. His forehead pressed lightly against my hair, his breath

warm and uneven.

“Damn those bitches…”

I let out a helpless chuckle and patted his head before speaking. “We got a clue about our target now.”

“That woman didn’t even know that there was a bomb placed inside her body.”

Lucien words made us freeze. My eyes shrank.

“What do you mean?”

“I was watching every single movement she made,” Lucien said quietly. I felt him lift his head from my shoulder, his gaze turning toward Arnold and the others. “I was afraid she might have another trick hidden up her sleeve.”

His voice lowered.

“She looked like she was really about to speak–to give us the name of the one who commanded her. But it was already to late.” His jaw tightened. “When the bomb planted somewhere in her body detonated, I saw the way her eyes widened in disbelief, looking at us in horror as if she couldn’t believe what happened. It all happened fast.”

My fingers curled up. Although I wouldn’t forgive Nanny for what she had done to my son, I felt that this was too much. All she wanted was just to bring back her children.

I sighed helplessly and shook my head. All actions had different courses of consequences.

And as for that mastermind from the North, I’ll make sure to hunt him down.

He was definitely targeting my family.

I have to heal fast–I have to restore my eyes fast.

“Damn it,” Arnold cursed. “I’ll tell Ian and the other from the intel to focus on investigating the North–especially the Montero.”

Hearing this, I nodded my head. “Yes, please do.”

“We’ll be going now, Alpha, Luna. We’ll send you the report of the investigation later.”

“Send someone to clean this mess here too.” Lucien added with a cold tone.

It was a good thing that this basement was large and Agatha’s basement were fire and bullet proof. Although the room had turned black from the bomb, aside from that room alone, the other room weren’t affected.

“Okay, Alpha.”

Afterwards, I heard their footsteps running out, leaving the basement with the two of us alone.

I raised my head, ‘looking up at him in suspicion. “You’re not lying to me when you said that you weren’t hurt, are you?”

“I’m not lying”

“Lucien.”

“I’m really not lying since it wasn’t me who said I wasn’t hurt,” he explained. “I’m innocent.”

I clicked my tongue and reached out, slapping his chest. “You threatened him, of course he would lie for you!”

“Tsk. Let’s go and get you to the physician.”

I grabbed his wrist and started walking–memorizing the same path that we took earlier, counting the exact steps we had walked on our way here in the basement and besides, this wasn’t my first time coming here so it was easy for me to visualize the place.

“It will leave on its own. It’s just burns and besides, have you forgotten my abilities?” he said.

Hearing this, the veins around my forehead throbbed. I angrily slapped his hands and if I could glare right now, I would be already glaring at him.

“You’re being reckless! My heart almost stopped when you suddenly shielded me with your body!”

“Now you finally know how I feel when I saw you that night three days ago,” he coldly replied, making me paused and almost forgot the words I wanted to say.

He was still angry about it.

I pursed my lips and I heard him added.

“If you continue being reckless and forget to take care of the body I’m protecting,” he said coldly, every word weighted with intent, “then next time, I’ll do the same.”

I gritted my teeth. “You dare?”

“Try me.”

“Lucien!”

I felt him exhale heavily before leaning in, his face so close to mine that our foreheads touched.

“Just as you worry about me,” he murmured, his voice finally softening, “I worry about you too. If this keeps up, I might die of a heart attack before any enemy gets the chance.”

The irritation in my chest deflated instantly.

I leaned into him helplessly. “I won’t do it again. And neither will you.”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, I suddenly felt the ground leave my feet as he scooped me up in a bridal carry.
