Am I your mate?I asked, not looking away from his gaze, trying to read his expression through his eyes.

Lucien’s eyes didn’t waver as he studied me. The silence between us felt heavier than any words could manage. Then, slowlydeliberatelyhe nodded.

The movement was small, but it carried a weight that made my breath hitch.

My wolfHis voice was low, almost rough, like gravel dragged across stone. My wolf couldn’t be wrong. He doesn’t usually react to anyone or feel restlessalways wanting to pounce on someonebut when it comes to you-He stopped himself, his jaw tightening before he finished. That’s why I always lose my reasoning when it comes to you.

For a second, my mind refused to process what he had just implied.

No

Waithe couldn’t mean-

You’re sayingI almost took a step backward. My voice faltered, and I forced the words out. You’re say you’re my mate?

His silver eyes locked on mine. There was no hesitation. No playful smirk. No coy avoidance. Just the quiet certainty of a man who already knew the answer.

Yes.

YouI took a deep breath. Have you known this already? Since when?

So that’s why I couldn’t resist him. Why I couldn’t say no to him. Why I always wanted to cling to him, almost as if he became a magnetwhy I always felt attracted to him.

It was because he was my mate.

But isn’t this a bit absurd?

Although I wanted him to be my mateand now that he really was my mateugh, I didn’t know anymore.

But isn’t Alexander also my mate? We both haven’t rejected each other, so how come?

The air in the room shifted. It wasn’t just the weight of his wordsit was the way the truth settled into my bones, like something foreign but undeniable.

I had wondered before if he had become my mateespecially since Kara, who had disappeared after suffering a crushing blow from the betrayal of our mateAlexanderhad willingly called out to Lucien,

So that explained why.

But still, hearing the truth out loud and getting my suspicion confirmed sent such a strong ripple of shock through me that I had to grip the edge of the table behind me.

He took a step forward, but his expression softened in a way I wasn’t used to seeing from Lucien Nightshade -the cold, calculating Alpha who rarely let anything show.

But,he said firmly, I will respect you. Until your wolf awakens and recognizes me, I won’t claim you.”

My mouth went dry. His words should have been reassuring. They should have made me feel safe. But they also carried a dangerous undertone, as if he were saying: the moment she awakens, there will be no going backhe would claim me entirely as his.

I swallowed. Soit’s safe for us to be around each other now, right?

He smiled faintly, but it wasn’t a relaxed one. It was the kind that hinted at a danger beneath the surface. What safety are you talking about? Even if we weren’t marked as matesyou are my contractual mate. And now that you are truly my mate, we’re legal.”

He paused and his eyes narrowed. Or are you still attached to that bastard, Alexander?

I frowned. I wasn’t.

He sneered. Oh. I thought maybe the reason you were so resistant toward me was because you were stil waiting for Alexander to come back to you.”

His words made my skin crawl. I rolled my eyes at him. You know I don’t feel that way about Alexander, Lucien.”

Oh, I don’t know,he replied coldly, making me sigh heavily.

I clapped my forehead. I haven’t fully rejected Alexander, Lucien.”

Then reject him completely. You should know that I am your mate now, little wolf,he snarled, as his arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer.

He lowered his face, his gaze locked onto me, then dropped to my lips. What I hate the most is sharing, little

wolf.”

I rolled my eyes and patted his cheek. You said you’d give me time until Kara woke up and acknowledged that you are our mate. Are you going back on your word?

He chuckled. I’m not. After all, I’ve been restraining myself so much that I might as well have become a monk at this point.”

I laughed, too. Now stop holding me. Your sister’s glare could burn us.

Lucien glanced over my shoulder and saw Kathleen, whose face was red but she wore a knowing smile.

Knowing her, she would pester me later and keep on teasing me about what she just saw

She’s really annoying,” Lucien commented, but his voice was soft.

I chuckled. But she’s cute.”

He laughed and leaned down, giving me a kiss on the forehead, then checked the watch on his wrist. For now, we have other things to focus on. Tomorrow night is the Alpha Council’s private banquet. Are you ready?

I straightened up, coughing and pretending not to mind the kiss earlier. You bet.

His lips curved slightly at my tone, as if he knew my mind wasn’t actually on the banquet. He didn’t say anything more he just gave me a long, lingering look before I turned and walked out.

The second the door closed behind me, my mind snapped back to work.

If tomorrow night would be a political battleground disguised with fine wine and silverware, then I needed to fit the partbut not in the way they expected. I wouldn’t show up as some silent, glittering accessory on Lucien’s arm. I wouldn’t be their entertainment.

I was here to earn their respect and their support.

That meant no frills, no fragile lace, no meaningless sparkle.

I went to my wardrobe and pulled out a perfectly tailored suit. Black. Sharp. Clean lines that would frame my figure without making me look like a decorative piece.

When I walked into that room tomorrow night, I wanted every Alpha present to see me as an equal- someone who could sit at their table, not just serve it.

As I laid the suit out on my bed, Kathleen walked in without knocking, as usual.

I shot her a helpless look. Didn’t your brother teach you to knock?

She chuckled and waved her hands. We’re sisters. Right, sisterinlaw?

Her teasing tone made me embarrassed. Before I could speak, her gaze went straight to the outfit, and her lips curled into an approving smile.

Well, well. Look at you, planning to slay them before you even open your mouth. She stumbled, unbuttoned her clothes, and flopped directly onto my bed.

She reeked of alcohol.

I gave her a disgusted look. Go take a shower. You reek of alcohol. Are you planning to kill your kidneys?

She laughed and waved her hand nonchalantly. It’s fine, it’s fine. Just a small drink.”

Small drink, my ass.

She stood up and headed to the bathroombut before she went in, she paused and looked at me with a smile. You know, she said slowly, I think I’m actually happy for you.

I glanced at her in mild surprise. Kathleen wasn’t exactly known for sentimental admissions. Happy for me?

She nodded, a mischievous gleam in her eyes. You’ve done something I didn’t think was possible. You’ve made my coldblooded brother act like a human being again.”

I laughed softly, shaking my head. I don’t think I can take credit for that.”
