Less than an hour later, the chaos outside finally began to fade. The warriors had already returned in triumph. Some of them were laughing and bragging to their fellow and nonfellow warriors about how they had killedwiped outthe rogues who attacked Nightshade earlier.

The air no longer trembled with snarls and howls. The deep rumble we kept hearing earlierbut chose to ignore while trying to protect the pups in the nurserybecame nothing more than distant echoes. Instead, it was replaced by the heavy shuffle of paws on gravel, the creak of the gates opening, and the loud murmurs of returning warriors.

I watched as the families of those returning warriors immediately ran to their mates, their husbands, wives, sons, and daughterswith relief smiling on their faces.

I knew how devastating war could be. It could destroy a family. That’s why whenever there was war between packs, the families of those warriors would pay tribute to their moon goddess and ask for protection.

Kathleen peeked out from the shelter door first, her sharp eyes scanning the courtyard. All clear. None of those rogues managed to enter our shelters.

I nodded. Yes. Now let’s invite those warriors for a beer and some fun so they can relax.

Kathleen nodded her head. Yeahafter all, the beers we prepared were sneakily brought from the storage room. We’d better be prepared to be scolded by Lucien.

I rolled my eyes. That was your idea, not mine. I’m just following your orders.

You’re not the type to follow orders, duh,” she rolled her eyes. You followed me of your own will, which is why you’re my accomplice.”

Before I could speak, she smirked and nudged my arm.

So, you’d better work hard and coax Lucien later so that we won’t get punished, okay?

I grimaced and playfully slapped her hand. You coax him. Why me?

You’re his Luna, of course.

You’re his sister, duh.

Kathleen wiped her eyes, pretending to cry. You know once your brother finds his wife, the sister is forgotten.”

I rolled my eyes. Shut it, Kathleen. I’m not doing it. If he wants to punish us for sneaking the beers, then so be it.

Kathleen dropped her hands and clicked her tongue. All you have to do is spread your legs open, it’s not that hard.

My lips twitched. Then you do it.

Kathleen looked at me in disgust. Ew. Hell no. That’s my brother.

Then stop suggesting such things,I rolled my eyes. Maybe it’s time for you to find your mate. I’ll mention this to your brother-

I’m out. I’ll go entertain the warriors and drink with them until they can’t recognize their mothers tomorrow! See you! Take the pups out since it’s already safe!she said, running away as if someone had stepped on her tail.

I clicked my tongue and shook my head. Even though she complained she hadn’t met her fated mate yet- when I mentioned it, she ran immediately.

Women are really complicated.

I sighed and went to the nursery. The pups, who were supposed to be sleeping by now, were playing pillow fight with each other.

I clapped my forehead and looked at them in resignation.

Little ones,I called out, crouching to address the pups, who were playing pillow fights without a care about why they were sent to the nursery in the first place. Time to get some fresh air. You can go out now.

They paused their pillow fight, and then one even had the guts to throw a pillow at my faceif I hadı dodged, it surely would have landed.

I sighed. Taking care of kids was really hard. Salute to all mothers out there who deal with such naughty kids with unlimited energy. It was better to fight rogues than to deal with such energetic children.

We can fight the bad wolves with this!one of the kids said, giggling.

Yes, yes. Just throw the pillows right at their faces,I answered helplessly while helping the kid who’d been buried by pillows and had already resigned to his fate and kept lying flat.

Are you a bad wolf or a good wolf, Pretty Sister?the kid hugging a pillow asked with her innocent face.

I paused and couldn’t help but chuckle at the way she addressed me.

I reached out and patted her head, growling in an attempt to scare her.

I’ll punish those naughty kids who don’t listen to me.”

Instead of getting scared, they all laughed.

You look silly!they commented, making me sigh.

Alright, alright. Silly it is.

Can we go outside now, Pretty Sister? I miss my parents.

I nodded and smiled at her. Yes. Go on and meet them. They are all waiting for you.

With my assurance, they giggled and ran to the exit.

I thought they would leave without looking back, but they stopped and waved at me. Bye, bye, Pretty Sister! Thanks for taking care of us!

I paused, a smile tugging at my lips.

The sight of their bright smiles and carefree nature stirred something deep within me, a warmth I hadn’t realized I’d been missing.

In moments like this, I understood why the pups had always been fiercely protected by the pack. Their innocence, their laughterit was everything that had been lost in the aftermath of so many years of war.

The pack wars had been brutal, leaving scars deeper than the eyes could see. Many had lost their chance to bear children, to create families, to build a future. The constant fear and bloodshed had stolen their hopes, and as a result, birth rates had dwindled.

And so, the pupstheir futurehad to be safeguarded at all costs. They were the only thread left that could pull us from the ashes.

I snapped out of my thoughts when I saw Lucien’s Beta approaching, though there was some resistanc eyesespecially after what happened that day when I used him as a tester, which was my faulthe respectfully nodded at me but kept his distance.

It’s all handled. Alpha Lucien is waiting for you.

I coughed, offering a small smile. I know. I’ll go and check on the warriors to see if they’re comfortable.”

I said, hurrying past him.

When Lucien’s Beta had approached just now, my eyes happened to meet Lucien’s, who stood several feet away, speaking to two warriors who looked like they’d taken heavier hitsoffering Lucien drinks.

While he was listening to them, his eyes never left mine.

For some reason, it made my heart tug.

Something about it made my heart climb into my throat and cheeks before I could stop it.

I think I need a cold beer too, don’t I?

I hurried over to Kathleen’s space, where she was testing her strength on the other warriors. Those who lost had to drink a whole cup of beer.

Sensing my presence, she paused and waved at the warriors to let them play by themselves for a while.

What’s up, pretty lady? Want a drink?

I flicked her forehead. You sound like a pervy old man.”

Kathleen chuckled and handed me a beer, which I accepted.

Lucien’s gaze could burn you, you know, she said.

I finished the whole beer. I know. That’s why I’m here.

Seeing the two of you pisses me off,she said, grabbing my wrist.

Before I could protest, she dragged me toward Lucien, nearly making me choke.

Traitor!

Kathleen dropped my wrist. Go talk about whatever you want to talk about. Tsk, couples these days are so annoying.
