The last person I expected to see at the banquet was Alpha Kade.

It had been months since I’d last seen him, but the memory was sharp and unpleasant–like the taste of blood in the back of my throat. Every prior encounter with him had been a careful dance. He always looked at me like I was a challenge he couldn’t wait to claim: the kind of man who didn’t take no for an answer, who thought boundaries were just obstacles to wear down over time.
And now, there he was, standing near one of the tall arched fountains, a glass of amber liquor in his hand, his sharp eyes scanning the garden like a predator assessing the herd.
It was such a disgusting feeling.
When his gaze landed on me, his brows lifted and the familiar smirk curled over his lips.
“Well, well,” he drawled, setting down his glass and making his way toward me with the smooth confidence of a man who believed the entire universe bent around him.
“Scarlett, I didn’t expect to see you here. What a coincidence.”
The look in his eyes was unmistakable—he had always looked at me like this, as if I were his prey an wanted to sink his teeth in. The memory of past dealings with him rushed back; his greed had never been subtle.
Even when I was with Alexander, he never made any effort to disguise his desire for me.
It was nauseating.
I ignored him and looked at the Luna who was tightly clenching my suit from behind.
Seeing me look at her, she met my gaze with
I gave her a nod and a reassuring smile.
worry.
I reached out and gently patted her head. “It’s okay. Go back to the hall and enjoy the banquet.”
She looked at me with teary eyes. “W–What about you?”
“I’ll come right after you.”
She pursed her lips and looked at Kade, who was watching us with amusement. “I–I don’t like his vibe…. be careful.”
I paused and chuckled. Even Kade was taken aback,
“I don’t like him either–not just his vibe. Don’t worry, I’ll be right back.”

Seeing that she couldn’t force me to go with her and avoid Kade, she sighed, nodded, and then ran off without looking back.
“Am I really that scary?” Alpha Kade twirled his wine glass while watching the Luna’s retreating back.
I sneered. “You should take a good look at yourself.”
Kade looked down at himself, then at me, and smiled. “Handsome.”
Up close, I could smell the faint musk of his cologne, mingled with the scent of whiskey on his breath.
“Long time no see, Scarlett. You’re as sexy as ever–even sexier now,” he licked his lips. “I take it Alexander is here too?”
I held back the urge to vomit at his undisguised lust. “He wasn’t invited.”
His smirk deepened. “Right… I remember now. His pack’s been stirring up more controversy than even the Council can stomach.” His voice carried a mockery that was almost a laugh.
“What do you want, Kade?” I said, keeping my voice neutral.
“I’ve heard that you haven’t been staying at Alexander’s pack because he’s been raising a whore under his arm?” Kade asked with a smile, his eyes scrutinizing me.
I sighed. “And so, what about it?”
The smirk on his lips deepened. “I told you before, Scarlett. If you chose me over that scum Alexander, you wouldn’t be a broken Luna who was easily discarded after pouring your energy into building the Crescent Moon Pack.”
Hearing him mention my past made my gaze go cold. I let out a mocking laugh.
“Choose you? If I chose you, I’d be in a worse state than I am now.”
“Don’t be so harsh on me, darling. I’ve heard you’re working on a bill right now.” He smirked, making me
pause.
Right. Kade was an Alpha with influence–and I was here to make more allies. If gaining his vote for my proposal meant enduring a conversation with him, then so be it.
Seeing me change my attitude, he chuckled. “Let’s talk. Alone.”
I frowned. “We can talk here.”
“There are eyes everywhere.”
“All right,” I said.
Endure, Scarlett. Kade isn’t stupid enough to make a move on you at this banquet.
He led me away from the garden, where everything could easily be seen from the windows above. His stride

When we reached a quiet alcove near the back of the estate, he stopped and turned toward me, leaning one shoulder casually against the wall. His eyes were darker here in the dim light, and I could feel the shift in his energy–a private, predatory focus.
“You see, I haven’t found my mate yet,” he said, his tone dropping into something sensual. “But I’ve heard about you… about how Alexander left you.”
His gaze slid down my frame in a way that made my skin crawl.
“You’ve been through a lot,” he continued, his voice turning syrupy. “I like women who can survive a storm. It makes them stronger… sexier.”
I just looked at him coldly and let him speak.
When he started walking towards me, I stepped back.
But before I could do so, his hand landed on my lower back, his palm pressing with unmistakable claim.
“Why not be my Luna, Scarlett? I can give you what Alexander couldn’t.”
The sheer arrogance of it snapped the thin thread of diplomacy I had been holding onto.
Bowing my head for the sake of not ruining a chance to gain a vote from someone like him?
Fuck it!
I gritted my teeth and pushed him away–hard. “Piss off!”
The smirk vanished, replaced by a flash of rage. His nostrils flared and his jaw tightened. “You think you’re too good for me?” His voice sharpened into something vicious. “You’re just a fucking loose woman, a broken Luna at that! How dare you pretend to be pure in front of me when so many men have already gone their way between your legs?!”
My eyes reddened–with anger. I gnashed my teeth. “You really think you qualify to say that to me?”
“Why not? I know who you came here with. Lucien.” He spat the name like it was an insult, though something else–envy–was beneath it.
“You think a powerful Alpha like him would ever want you?” he sneered. “He won’t even notice you. Even if he does, you’re just convenient for him, easy to fuck. When he’s bored, you’ll be right back where you started- alone and unwanted.”
