Chapter 45
Scarlett’s POV
Morning arrived with gray skies, those heavy clouds smothering any sunlight before it could even reach the ground. The grayness clung to the air, heavy and damp, as if the world itself had paused in anticipation of something it didn’t want to face.
I couldn’t help but take a deep breath, recalling the events of yesterday. At first, we were confident that we could easily pass the bill, but there were still obstacles blocking our way.
Some of them didn’t want to approve the bill for their own personal reasons, and some of them had already been bought by Alexander.
That motherfucker. Just how much did he want to make me suffer by refusing to approve the bill? He had already fucked up my life, and now he wanted to devour me completely, to the point he would swallow me whole.
What more did he want? Wouldn’t he rather be with his mistress?! Fuck. Just thinking about it made me lose
my composure.
I stood by the tall windows of the guest wing, one hand wrapped loosely around a steaming mug of coffee. The scent was grounding, but my mind and heart were far from calm.
Since they wanted me to be ground into powder, I would make sure to chew up those who dared to be my obstacles–until there was nothing left of them.
And I would start with Alexander and his oh–so–good mistress, Faye.
I gritted my teeth and drank my coffee before I went to the dining hall, where I saw Lucien already seated at the head of the table, a spread of documents neatly laid out before him. His suit jacket hung on the back of his chair, sleeves rolled to his forearms, revealing lean muscles that flexed with every stroke of his
pen.
I slid into my seat beside him. His gaze lifted just long enough to take me in–slow and deliberate–before it dropped back to the papers.
“You’re up early,” he remarked. His voice was low and smooth, but that deep timbre that always found a way under my skin.
I raised an eyebrow and looked up at him. “Is this what you call breakfast?”
“Why, jealous?”
“There’s no way I’d get jealous of your so–called breakfast of paperwork,” I replied, reaching for the coffee pot.
“So, why are you being such a workaholic today?” I poured my cup, watching the dark liquid swirl.
His mouth curved slightly, the kind of smile that isn’t really a smile at all–full of teasing. “Guess wrong, I’ll make you face the consequences.”
I arched a brow. “Threats before breakfast?”

“Reserved only for you,” he murmured, leaning back in his chair.
I took a sip, holding his gaze over the rim. “You’re terrible at morning conversation.”
“And you’re better?” His tone was teasing, but his eyes lingered–too long for casual.
I rolled my eyes at him. “Of course. Not just conversations.” I winked at him.
His face darkened. “Little wolf.”
I looked at him innocently. “What?”

For a heartbeat, neither of us said anything. The air thickened, tension coiling between us like a drawn bowstring. His silver eyes dipped briefly to my lips before snapping back up, controlled, unreadable–filled with desire.
We were both on the verge of escalating the moment when Kathleen shifted into the chair at my other side, her perfume slicing through the silence like a knife. She leaned in, her voice pitched low.
“Alexander’s Beta was seen in the border town last night.”
My fork paused halfway to my mouth. “Are you sure?”
She nodded, her expression grim. “Saw it myself. He wasn’t alone. Two others with him–neutral colors, no insignia.”
Neutral colors meant rogues, mercenaries, or wolves who would swear loyalty to whoever paid the most. If the Beta was sniffing around the borders, it wasn’t a casual trip.
“Could be intimidation,” I murmured, setting my fork down. “They might be pressuring council members who haven’t pledged yet.”
Lucien’s pen stopped moving. He set it down, his eyes flicking between us, instantly sensing this was no idle gossip.
“We’ll handle it,” he said, his gaze steady on mine.
“How?”
“We split,” Lucien replied, leaning back. “I’ll meet Alpha Reynold again. Lock in his vote before Kade tries something clever. You-” his pause was deliberate “-will go to the training grounds. Speak to the Omegas and the female warriors.”
“You want me to give a speech?”
“I want you to remind them why they should back you,” he said, his voice low but edged with command. “And if Alexander’s playing intimidation games, your presence will counter it.”
I met his eyes. He didn’t blink. He trusted me with this–but he was also testing me.
“Fine,” I said at last.

The training grounds smelled of sweat, dust, and oiled leather. The morning chill still clung to the air, but the warriors were already knee–deep in training, the sounds of lists on pads and boots on dirt filling the space. Omegas kept to their own corner, their eyes flicking toward the higher ranks as if gauging whether they were
welcome here.
I stepped forward, heels crunching against the gravel before I switched to the low steps of the platform. Conversations faltered. Some heads bowed; others just stared.
“Strength,” I began, my voice carrying cleanly over the yard, “isn’t about rank. Or titles. Or bloodlines.”
A ripple went through the crowd–surprise, curiosity, maybe disbelief.
“Strength is will,” I said, scanning from the Omegas at the back to the warriors in the front. “It’s the choice to stand when you’re told to kneel. To keep fighting when everyone else has already decided you’ve lost.”
Somewhere in the third row, a young Omega lifted her chin. I caught it, smiled faintly, and continued.
“No council vote can give you that. No Alpha can take it away. And when the day comes–when your pack needs you–you will stand because it is in your memory who you are, not because you see your name on a sheet of paper.”
Backs straightened. Eyes sharpened. Shoulders squared. I felt it–some of them agreed with what I said, but a few others looked at me with disdain, as if they couldn’t believe me and wouldn’t dare to.
I sighed and was about to speak again when I heard light footsteps breaking the moment, coming toward me and making me pause.
There she was a young Omega girl, maybe sixteen, rushing forward, clutching a sealed envelope with a smile lighting up her face.
“Miss Scarlett! Luna!” she called, breathless. “Someone who said they admired you asked me to give this to
you.”
I paused and glanced at the envelope. Seeing her bright eyes so excited for me, I let out a helpless sigh and took it.
“Is it a love letter, Miss Luna?” she asked, excitement laced in her tone.
I stared at the letter. The corner of my lips curved up, but my heart felt cold.
“Yes, it’s a love letter.”
I recognized the sharp, deliberate handwriting on the envelope.
Alexander. That scum again.
My jaw tightened. Kaya, who had been dormant, stirred uneasily inside me, her low growl rumbling inside. I folded the letter and slid it into my jacket before anyone could see it.

“Are you okay, Miss Luna? Is it not a love letter?”

The soft yet worried words from the young Omega brought me back. I immediately composed myself, hiding my emotions.
I looked at her and gave her a warm smile as I reached out and patted her head. “It is a love letter. I appreciate your trouble in delivering it to me.”
The girl beamed. “No problem! I’ll deliver more to you if that brother ever comes back!”
I was about to ask her if she had contact information or had seen the face of the so–called “brother” who delivered the love letter–thinking to instruct her to let me know–when she suddenly dashed off happily, bouncing as she ran.
I shook my head and let out a heavy sigh before glancing at some of the curious eyes from the people on the training grounds.
I clapped my hands to bring their attention back. “Alright, enough with the gossip. Let’s get back to training.
On the other side, Lucien had found Alpha Reynold in the council wing, seated at a long table stacked with rolled maps and a pot of cooling tea. Reynold greeted him with a nod, but his eyes were wary–and at the same time, helpless.
“Good to see you again, Lucien. Where’s Scarlett?” he asked.
