A soft knock pulled me from the light edge of sleep. However, I ignored it, thinking that maybe I was just dreaming again.
Just as I was about to drift into my dreamland, I heard the soft knock again.
“Scarlett?” Kathleen’s voice filtered through the door, warm but careful.
I sighed, pushed the hair from my face, and took off the blanket that wrapped around me. “Come in.”
The door opened, and Kathleen slipped inside, balancing a tray. The scent of fresh bread and tea drifted through the room.
“I thought you might want breakfast here,” she said, setting the tray on the low table near the window. “You were up late.”
“Have you done something wrong?” I reached for the tea first, wrapping my fingers around the cup’s warmth.
“What do you mean by that?” she asked, her eyes lingering on the plate as she adjusted it so it wouldn’t fall.
“Why are you being extra nice right now? Bringing breakfast to my bed. Did you do something and want me to cover it up?” I asked, watching her freeze and give me a smile filled with guilt.
“Well… it’s not necessarily bad since my brother asked me to bring you breakfast in bed from now on,” she said with a smile, fidgeting with her fingers.
I took a sip of tea and looked at her. “So you made a deal with Lucien. So tell me, what made you do this willingly?”
She sighed, pouted, and sat on my bed. “Well, it really wasn’t a big deal. There’s someone who keeps asking for my hand in marriage–he’s not my mate since my wolf doesn’t react to him–he kept bothering me so I punched him in the face, and now he says that I almost killed him.”
I frowned. “And then? What happened?”
“When my brother found out, he was furious and almost killed the guy but I begged him not to,” she said, shaking her head and rubbing her arms. “It was terrifying. If I didn’t make a deal with him, that guy would definitely be dead.”
I didn’t comment or care about whether that guy was alive or not. What I cared about was her feelings.
“Are you okay? Did he hurt you?” I asked, looking at her with concern.
Kathleen brushed it off by chuckling. “I’m fine. He tried to pounce on me but I beat him up. That’s why he keeps saying I almost killed him. He’s already been expelled from the pack.”
I couldn’t help but frown at that. I didn’t know if I was just being paranoid, but I felt something was wrong

even though I couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
“Did he do anything after he was expelled?” I asked.
She paused and then hesitated.
“What is it? Just tell me,” I pressed, seeing her uncertainty.

“Well, he just said that my brother was shielding a broken omega who ran away from her mate–her Alpha- to have an affair.” After Kathleen said that, she sneered and cursed. “Damn him! What the fuck is he babbling about!”
My hand stilled. Heat rose, not from embarrassment but from irritation. “It’s Faye’s doing. She’s trying to paint me as the one who had an affair, while she, she just came to heal and help mend Alexander’s broken heart.”
Kathleen rolled her eyes and sneered. “They’re threatened. If everyone finds out she’s the mistress, they would turn their backs on her, and Alexander would be branded a cheater.”
I chuckled and lifted the cup halfway to my lips. “I commend how persistent she is in trying to bury me. However, no matter what she does, it won’t change the fact that she will always be the mistress, and her Alpha is going to great lengths just to keep our bonds.”
“Aren’t you worried?” she suddenly asked.
“About what?”
“Rumors.”
I shrugged my shoulders. “Let it be. Anyone who hears it and knows me won’t believe it anyway.”
Kathleen, still worried, couldn’t help but comment, “But that woman is ruining your public image.”
“It’s fine. Let her enjoy it for now,” I said calmly, but my eyes turned cold. “She’ll be the one who has to shed more tears from now on.”
I took a slow sip of tea, letting the bitter warmth steady me. Faye’s games were getting wilder, as if she couldn’t wait to get rid of me. At first, I thought I should just let her be, since her taunts and petty tricks were amusing and I had other things to focus on. But now…
It was no longer amusing.
She was trying to ruin my public image just as my bill was up for votes to become law.
By mid–morning, I had received Lucien’s message–from the guard who delivered it, keeping his tone neutral, though I sensed the tension beneath his words as he spoke five simple ones.
“The Alpha wants you now.”

I was about to ask why Lucien didn’t come himself and jokingly said I wouldn’t go, but the guard was shaking so badly it looked like he’d cry if I continued teasing him. So I immediately changed my tone and told him I’d go right away, which relieved him, and he quickly led me.
When I arrived at the training ground, the air was crisp, carrying the metallic tang of weapons and the earthy scent of turned soil.
There he was. Lucien stood near the sparring ring, arms folded, watching the female warriors run drills. His silver eyes met mine immediately.
“You’re just in time,” he said, his voice carrying easily over the sound of clashing practice blades. “I wanted you to see their progress.”
I stepped closer, my gaze following the swift movements of the fighters. Their stances were sharper, their strikes more precise.
“They’ve improved,” I admitted. “Confidence suits them.”
A faint smile touched his lips. “You’d know.”
Before I could answer, a sharp cry cut through the air. One of the warriors dropped her blade, clutching her arm. Blood streaked down from a shallow but clean cut–too clean for a dulled training edge.
I was already moving toward her, my eyes scanning the fallen weapon. One glance told me what I needed to know. The blade wasn’t a blunted practice sword. It was sharpened steel.
“This was deliberate,” I murmured, my voice low enough for only Lucien to hear.
His eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint in his silver gaze. “Faye.”
I didn’t disagree. That mad woman wanted to ruin me so badly, it was no surprise she’d resort to such petty tricks.
Lucien signaled for the injured warrior to be taken to the healers, his movements crisp and efficient. I could almost see the calculations running behind his eyes.
Before either of us could speak further, a guard approached at a brisk pace.
“Alpha,” he said, bowing slightly. “There’s an unexpected guest at the gates. He says his name is Alpha Alexander. He’s requesting a private word with Luna Scarlett.”
The space between Lucien’s brows tightened. “Private?”
“Yes, Alpha. His exact words.”
Lucien’s gaze slid to me, unreadable but intense. “You don’t have to see him.”
But I knew what he meant was that he didn’t want me to see him.
I looked him in the eye and gave him a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, I won’t meet him alone.”

It took a moment, but he nodded, allowing it. His gaze was dark and his jaw tightly clenched.
Kathleen, who had been on the far side of the yard, stepped forward. “I’ll follow at a distance.”
Lucien didn’t look pleased, but he nodded once. “Be careful. If anything happens, tell me right away.”
Lucien’s words were directed at me. He looked at me and said, “I’ll know if you tell me. Just call my name and I’ll be there. I’ll know.”
I didn’t comment, but I nodded my head for reassurance.
