Chapter 60
Scarlett’s POV
The ride back to the quarters stretched beneath a sky heavy with gray clouds–the kind that looked as if they might split open, but never did. My mare’s hooves struck a steady rhythm. Honestly, seeing Alexander taken aback by the words I used against him made me feel refreshed.
I tucked the envelope Kane had given me, under Alexander’s command, securely away. After all, I still had to discuss it with Lucien as soon as I arrived at the quarters.
You did a good job going against him. Kaya’s voice curled sharply in my head.
In a good mood, I couldn’t help but tease her. “I thought you disappeared earlier because you were scared of him?”
“Of course not! I didn’t disappear!” Kaya’s voice was louder now, agitated. “I listened to your conversation and even watched his ugly faces whenever you got the upper hand against him! He deserves it!”
I let out a laugh. “I know, right. But I don’t want it to end there. If he keeps insisting on getting in my way–him and Faye- then I won’t show them any mercy.”
You’re all just talk. You let them talk about you,‘ she grunted.
I chuckled. “You have to be patient when dealing with people like them. You risk your reputation, your time, your proposal –so I have to take my time, let them think what they did is affecting me, make them believe they have the upper hand. Then it will hurt them most when I finally make my move–you have to be the bait, you know.”
‘So it’s like… to defeat the enemy, you must be the enemy of yourself first? Is that it?‘ Kaya murmured, and I could almost feel her roll her eyes.
I laughed helplessly. “Just leave this to me. After all, if I left things to you, you’d charge at them and beat them both to the point where they wouldn’t recognize themselves.”
“That’s exactly it! Why bother with all these painful and annoying steps, enduring their taunts, when we can just kill them directly? Problem solved!‘ she said, full of energy.
I couldn’t help but slap my forehead and sigh. “Problem solved, my ass! That would just land us with a bounty on our heads! That’s suicide.”
‘Oh, such a shame…‘ she sighed and grunted.
I rolled my eyes and stopped paying attention to her–especially since I was nearly at the quarters, our territory.
As soon as I dismounted the mare, I saw Lucien standing at the center of the courtyard, his eyes locked on mine as if he had been waiting just for me–or was making sure I arrived safely.
“How’s it going?” he asked, walking toward me and checking me from top to bottom, making sure I wasn’t hurt before he let out a sigh of relief.
“It’s all good. I made him speechless–but at the same time, he gave me something that made me speechless too.” I said while taking out the envelope and pressed it into his hand.
“What’s this?” he asked, starting to break the already cracked seal to see what was inside.
“It’s about those people who were against my proposal,” I said calmly with a sigh.

Oh? You were with my man… it seems Alexander’s company kept you busy…” she purred.
The way she lingered on the word ‘busy‘ made it drip with implication.
The guards glanced at each other, and one even bit back a grin.
knew she was stirring trouble as usual. After all, she couldn’t wait to ruin my reputation and get rid of me.
rolled my eyes at her. “Why? Jealous that Alexander hasn’t been keeping you around?”
My words made her smile freeze. A trace of anger and jealousy flashed in her eyes before it faded.
Her eyelashes fluttered. “Well… I’m happy he kept you so entertained.”
smirked. “Of course. It’s an honor for him, anyway.”
Her eyes trembled with anger, but I didn’t stay much longer to deal with her–especially since she was pregnant.
Still, with everyone’s eyes on us, I was sure their whispers would catch the wind and become more rumors against me.
Your reputation is at stake this time,” Lucien said beside me.
shrugged. “It’s fine. They’ll just talk about how I was with Alexander even though I’m with you.”
Lucien grunted. “That woman keeps lurking around here.”
Technically, this isn’t our place.”
A temporary place is still ours,” Lucien insisted.
Well, there’s nothing we can do about it. The council requested we stay in one place so they can call us easily for briefings ind meetings. Just endure it a bit longer. I can’t wait to go back to our pack either,” I said calmly as we walked the path back
o our quarters–the study area.
‘You’re not even worried about the rumors?” Lucien asked sharply.
I looked at him and smiled. “They can think whatever they want. I didn’t go to give them more to gossip about. As long as Faye is there to spread rumors about me, no matter how we try to set things right, people will believe what entertains ther

Both Lucien and I exchanged a glance and sighed.
“His vote has been forfeited, I said.
Kathleen’s eyes widened. “Why?”
“The council decided not to let him be part of the vote. If he joins, it would disrupt the balance given his influence, so he’s keeping a low profile. If they find out he’s secretly helping me–using underhanded tactics–the bill will be voided I explained calmly.

Before I could respond, Lucien cut me off. “It’s fine. I let them do it so that I can still be with Scarlett to help get her proposall approved.”
Back then, they requested that Lucien have no contact with me until the bill passed because he might influence the vote, so Lucien allowed them to put a leash on him.
Kathleen looked at Lucien, who seemed in a good mood, and couldn’t help rolling her eyes. “I’ve never seen anyone–the strongest Alpha–so happy to be put on a leash.”
