Chapter 68
Scarlett’s POV
I woke from a dream where an octopus had wrapped its tentacles around me so tightly I could barely breathe. Whe opened my eyes, the first thing I did was push away this “octopus” just to catch my breath.
“You’re awake?” His voice was low and hoarse, and he wrapped his arms around my waist again.
“You almost killed me! Get off.” I pushed him, but he didn’t even budge.
“Go back to sleep. There, there.” He spoke in a coaxing tone, trying to get me to sleep again.
I rolled my eyes at him. “It’s already afternoon. I’ve slept long enough. If you want to sleep, get off me.”
he opened his eyes and looked at me. “You’re going to the courtyard?*

Lucien stepped closer, his movements deliberate and controlled. His eyes held mine, as though measuring every crack in my composure. “Perception shapes power, little wolf. If they see you only through me, then your victories become mine. And you don’t want that.”
“No,” I admitted quietly, “I want them to see me.”
“Then let them,” he said. His hand brushed against the back of my chair, close enough that the wood groaned under his touch. “Step forward. Be more visible. Take the reins of Nightshade affairs yourself. Don’t just be beside me–stand ahead of me.”
The suggestion cut deeper than the rumors. My chest tightened. “You’d risk that? Your power for mine?”
Lucien’s lips curved faintly. “I’ve already risked more.”
The words sank deeper than I expected. His closeness pressed against me, his hand still resting near my shoulder, his breath brushing the edge of my hair. I could feel the heat of him, steady and unyielding, and for a dangerous moment, I wanted to lean back into it.
But pride stiffened my spine. I turned my head and met his gaze directly. “Careful, Lucien. If I step ahead of you, some might think you’ve been bewitched by me and lost your mind.”
His eyes glinted with something sharp, something that wasn’t quite anger. “Let them. I don’t need their opinion. I only need to know you won’t fall.”
The air between us thickened, taut as a drawn bow. My pulse betrayed me, quickening beneath his steady gaze. His hand shifted just slightly, brushing the curve of my waist before pulling back as if he’d touched fire.
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding.
“Fine,” I said, forcing my voice to be steady. “Then I’ll show them.”
“Yes… that’s my little wolf,” he whispered softly in my ear, his eyes suggestive, making my breath hitch.
Damn, lethal.
-THIRD PERSON’S POV
Meanwhile, in the halls of Crescent Moon, the morning work hummed noisily, though Alexander paced in his chamber. tension heavy in every step. Kane stood at parade rest, his face expressionless.
“You’ve been watching there,” Alexander remarked. “What is she doing?”
Kane’s tone was careful. “She’s gaining quiet support. Nightshade respects her more openly than before.”
Alexander’s eyes darkened, his voice a growl. “She was supposed to be nothing without me! She was supposed to listen only
to me!”
Kane didn’t say anything. His eyes were cold, and his fists clenched together. He took a deep breath and calmed himself before excusing himself.
Alexander ignored him, still thinking of the past Scarlett who had obeyed him no matter what he asked her to do.
The door opened then, and Faye swept in, silks trailing, her smile sharp until she caught the tail end of Alexander’s fury.
“What was that?” she asked, her voice edged with suspicion.
Alexander didn’t look at her. His jaw worked, hands clenched,

Faye’s eyes narrowed. “You’re still watching that bitch?!”
Alexander turned slowly, his gaze like ice. “I only watch to make sure what is mine isn’t stolen.”

Her laughter was brittle, sharp. “Yours? You said that I am the only one you want, Alexander! Yet here you are, keeping her bound while I wear the title of mistress!” She stepped closer, voice low and heated. “What does that make me, Alexander?”
His silence was cold, worse than any insult.
Faye’s face twisted, her pride cracking. “Second. Always second.”
When he didn’t deny it, or even glance her way, she spun on her heel and stormed out, the sound of her rage echoing through the halls.
