I watched as two younger men looked at each other before advancing side by side, their blades raised.
“We’ll fight you both,” one said boldly.
Kathleen’s eyes widened. “Don’t tell me you’re going to accept-”
I didn’t let her finish and smiled at the two. “Okay, come on.”
“You’re crazy!” I heard Kathleen exclaim, but she didn’t try to stop me–in fact, her tone was full of excitement, as if she couldn’t wait to see what would happen.
The two rushed at me in unison once I gave permission. One came from the left, the other from the right. I blocked, spun, and struck—each movement flowing as naturally as breath. Their blades clashed against my staff, but I pressed on, forcing them back step by step.
“You’ll have to coordinate better than that if you want to defeat me,” I taunted.
“Don’t underestimate us!” one snapped, swinging a high blow–but his partner was a moment too late, and their positions were thrown off. I shoved one into the other and knocked them both sprawling into the dirt.
The yard shook with laughter and cheers.
“Failed again. Is there anyone who can defeat me? Come at me, if you dare.” I spoke calmly, taking a deep breath after my earlier warmup.
“What about us?” Three stepped forward, faces set with determination.
I smiled and gestured for them to come.
The three attacked at once. My arms burned, my breath was heavy, but my concentration was as clear as water. I knocked one aside, ducked and parried, and let my instincts take over. I felt a sting to my shoulder that nearly made me hiss, but I dared not slow down.
With a loud cry, I swung my spear, knocking one off his feet and striking another in the belly.
The last tried to flank me, but I twisted, locked his arm, and sent him crashing to the dirt.
The yard went silent for half a heartbeat, stunned by what had just happened, before suddenly erupting.
“Luna! Luna Scarlett!”
“Damn! That was amazing!”
“Shit! Can Alpha Lucien even fight?!”
“You again?! See if the Alpha won’t send you out to face the rogues alone!”

I panted, sweat dripping down my temple, but I stood firm, my staff planted in the ground.

Then I saw Lucien standing at the edge of the training ground, apart from the crowd. His silver eyes were locked on mine. He didn’t speak, he didn’t interfere–but I saw pride glint in his gaze.
When the chanting finally faded, he moved, crossing the circle with unhurried steps. The warriors parted instinctively, though their eyes still lingered on me as if unwilling to look away.
“You’re bleeding,” he murmured, his hand brushing dangerously close to the shallow cut on my arm–a wound I hadn’t even noticed.
His touch hovered, not quite pressing, but warm enough to make me shiver.
“It’s just a scratch,” I said. “Don’t tell me you’re going soft over a little blood?”
His mouth curved. “Soft? No. But I don’t enjoy seeing my Luna battered as if she’s one of my reckless soldiers.”
I tilted my head. “Then maybe you should stop standing on the sidelines and actually fight me next time.”
A dangerous spark lit his eyes. “You’re bold, challenging me in front of my warriors.”
“They’d love to see it,” I teased, leaning in so only he could hear. “Besides, it might humble you.”
He chuckled under his breath, his voice hoarse. “Careful, Scarlett. You tempt me more than you know.”
Heat flared in my cheeks, though I masked it with a smirk. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“Oh, I would,” he answered smoothly, lowering his voice so only I could hear him. “But unlike them, I’d take my time and I wouldn’t let you walk away so easily.”
I swallowed, but forced myself to hold my head high, not giving him the satisfaction of seeing me rattled. “Empty threats, Alpha.”
“Promises,” he corrected, eyes gleaming with silver fire.
I shook my head, laughing despite the ache in my limbs. “You are impossible.”
After the event on the training ground, some even asked me to visit their grounds to spar with them and teach–which I promised to do if time allowed.
I heard later that Faye shattered her own mirror, bleeding on the shards as she screamed my name. She cried out that I would always overshadow her and that she would never be able to stand as Luna.
I sighed and tried not to think about them. Anyway, if the Higher Council decided on the date for the final session of the bill, I might not even see them again. Their petty lives didn’t matter to me. Still, I wished for their downfall.
The fire in the training yard burned bright against the cool night, its flames crackling, sparks twisting into the

sky. Warriors clustered loosely around it, mugs of ale in hand, laughter ringing freely through the air.
I lingered on the edge at first, listening as they spoke.
“She knocked Garrick flat on his back with a staff,” one of the young wolves said, grinning wildly as he gestured, “like he was nothing more than a training pup. I swear I’ll never let him live it down.”
Garrick sat by the fire, rubbing his ribs, but his scowl was betrayed by the tiniest curl of a smile. “Laugh it up, pup. If you think you’d last longer against her, step up and prove it.”
The circle erupted in more laughter.
“And Nami, too,” another chimed in, shaking his head. “Scarlett bested her in less than ten minutes. I’ve seen Nami fight through two wars, and even she couldn’t match her.”
There was an awed silence before one of the older fighters spoke, his words steady and heartfelt. “To our Luna,” he said, lifting his mug. “May her strength keep us unbroken.”
The cheer that followed echoed. Our Luna. Not whispered now, not in doubt. Declared.
My throat tightened. I stepped forward, their eyes turning to me at once.
“Respect,” I said, my voice soft but firm, “is not won in a single day, nor in a single fight. It must be earned again and again, until the day we draw our last breath. If you see me as your Luna, know this: I will fight to deserve it, every day, beside you.”
The murmurs that followed were quieter, steadier. Not drunken cheer, not fleeting excitement. Just belief.
I turned to step into the shadows again, but Lucien was already standing there, waiting. His presence pulled at me like the tide, unyielding and certain. He tilted his head toward the darker stretch beyond the fire. “Walk with me.”
I followed, warmed by the fire, the light fading behind us as the chilly night closed in on my shoulders. We moved under pines, their needles hissing softly in the wind, while fireflies faded under the moonlight.
“You should rest,” Lucien said, his voice low, almost casual.
I breathed a laugh. “You always tell me that.”
“Because you never do.” He stopped, turning to face me fully. His eyes caught the light–silver and sharp. “You fought hard today. You’ve endured every whisper, every rumor, without breaking. But you’re still human enough to bleed. Don’t pretend you’re made of steel.”
“I’m not pretending,” I murmured. “I just don’t have the luxury of stopping.”
