This was it. Today was the big day that would decide my fate from now on. Whether it would be placed in my hands or I would continue to be manipulated under the guise of this bond, I hoped to get the results I wanted right now.
“You didn’t sleep,” Lucien commented as he wrapped his hand around my waist.
I looked at him, dressed in a dark purple suit to match my light purple dress that hugged my body, accentuating my curves.
I glared at him. “And whose fault was that?”
He blinked at me innocently. “Definitely not mine.”
I rolled my eyes at him. His words from last night still echoed in my mind, repeating even as I tried to fall asleep.
Instead of thinking about events related to my bond dissolution, my thoughts kept turning back to his words, which left me dumbfounded. But thanks to that, I wasn’t nervous right now or constantly overthinking the outcome of the bond dissolution that hadn’t happened yet.
Instead, I felt relief.
“You did it on purpose, didn’t you?” I said as we walked together into the Supreme Hall, the highest council chamber where verdicts were carved in stone and where real judgment began.
Lucien tightened his grip on my waist and let out a chuckle. “I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
I rolled my eyes again. “Keep pretending.”
“And? Do you have an answer to what I said last night yet? Your response?” he retorted, leaving me speechless.
“Cat got your tongue?” he teased, making me glare at him again.
“Shut up.
Let’s go inside.” I hurriedly changed the subject–especially since I hadn’t decided how to respond despite spending the whole night thinking about it.
Lucien fixed his gaze on me, his eyes burning, and the corners of his lips still lifted. He then sighed helplessly. “Alright, my little wolf. Let’s get inside.”
I ignored the new nickname and walked in with him.
The Supreme Hall was large, with long seats to the left and right away from the court, reserved for those observing. I spotted Kathleen sitting there, waiting for us to enter.
I looked at Lucien. “Let go now. I’ll go to my seat.”

Lucien looked me in the eyes and playfully nudged my forehead. “Okay. I’ll watch from a distance.”
I smiled, nodded, and watched him sit next to Kathleen, who grinned and waved at me—I waved back too.
Then I glanced at the two seats in front, meant for me and Alexander.
I took a deep breath before walking over, ignoring Alexander’s burning gaze.
I looked at the leaders arrayed on the high platforms. They were the council elders, and the five High Council members were there too, watching from above.
On the right, opposite Lucien and Kathleen, I noticed Faye. Triumph filled her eyes as she looked at me, as if she were saying I’d finally be free and she wouldn’t have to put up with me bothering her Alpha any longer.
Her eyes held malice and envy she didn’t even try to hide. I looked at her coldly. Did she think I’d simply forgive her for trying to hurt me and my warriors?
I sighed heavily and straightened my shoulders, determined to hide the tremor beneath my skin. My wound still ached from the ambush days before, but I refused to show any discomfort on my face.
Once we were all present, the Head of the Council rose. His voice was deep, filled with authority, echoing through the chamber.
“This session calls upon Alpha Alexander of Crescent Moon and his legally bonded Luna, Scarlett of Crescent Moon, to present their claims regarding the dissolution of their sacred bond. Only the bonded may speak. No one else shall raise their voices.”
The weight of the decree felt crushing. I took a deep breath and stepped forward.
“My lords, honored Council, and everyone present in this Supreme Hall,” I began, my voice steadier and more confident than I expected. My heart thundered, but I continued. “A bond without trust, without respect, without love, is no bond at all. It’s a chain disguised as a bond. It is a shackle. What I ask is not rebellion, nor is it an insult to our traditions that have lasted for generations. What I ask is freedom. Freedom for myself, and a precedent so that no wolf should be condemned to chains disguised as faith.”
Murmurs echoed through the Supreme Hall. Some elders agreed with me, some were thoughtful, and some frowned as they shook their heads in clear disagreement.
I went on, pushing away the tremor in my throat. “You ask for proof? Then look at me. This mark-” I pulled my hair aside, revealing the scar burned deep into my neck. Recognition swept across the hall. “This was not an act of love. For me, it is a shackle. A sin I didn’t commit, but was forced to bear because I was bonded. A brand–a mark inflicted while he lay with his mistress.”
Gasps broke out. Some looked at me with pity.
I didn’t dare look at Lucien’s gaze now. I had just revealed to everyone the marks I had tried so hard to hide.
But I couldn’t care less. Call me a broken Luna if they want. To hell with what they think.
I looked coldly at Alexander, waiting for his words.

His jaw flexed, but he didn’t flinch. He stood up. “You dress betrayal in poetry, Scarlett, but what you are trying to do is destruction. The bond is not a trinket to be cast aside when it no longer pleases. It is the foundation of our kind–of packs, bloodlines, and order itself. To sever it is to invite chaos. If you succeed, then tomorrow every wolf with a fleeting doubt will demand the same. This isn’t about your freedom. It’s about the survival of who we are, Scarlett.”
His words landed heavily. I could hear murmurs of agreement.
I clenched my fists and stared at him. “You dare speak of survival when you can’t even honor your own? How funny.” I shot back. “You claim this is about the pack, about tradition–but everyone knows it’s about you, Alexander. You’re afraid you can no longer control me like before.”
The hall erupted again, whispers turning into sharp debate. The Head of the Council banged his staff once, echoing throughout the hall, and the murmurs ceased.
Alexander’s eyes gleamed, sharp as blades. “You think freedom will save you, Scarlett? That another bond- perhaps one you secretly desire–will make you whole again? No. Wolves without bonds lose themselves. You will lose yourself.”
My chest tightened. He knew. Of course he knew. His gaze flicked, just once, toward Lucien.
Lucien’s growl was so low it barely carried, but I felt it more than heard it.
Before I could speak, another voice cut across the chamber.
“This is ridiculous!”
Alpha Kade rose from the guest seats, his massive frame impossible to ignore. His voice was fierce and booming. “If you let this stand, you weaken every Alpha here! You hand power to Omegas, to the weak, to those who should never have the right to defy a bond once it’s chosen! Today it’s her–tomorrow it will be a hundred more. Where will it end? Do you want packs crumbling because mates decide they’ve changed their hearts?”
