The chamber was too quiet. There was no Scarlett to laugh, get pissed off, or even get angry at me whenever I tried to get her to rest. Especially knowing how tired she always was, but she would still push herself, fighting both for herself and for others.

I wanted her to get some rest and take a break, but she wouldn’t. I couldn’t do anything about it. If that’s what made her happy, I tried to accept it and simply watch over her from behind, so that if she ever fell, she’d know it wouldn’t hurtbecause no matter where she was, I’d always be there to catch her.

That damned mistress of Alexander always tried to send something to scare and get rid of Scarlett. I always intercepted it, and counterattacked together with her, all without letting Scarlett notice. But it seemed I was too careless and failed at my jobsince Faye’s tricks somehow slipped through and reached Scarlett.

I sat at Scarlett’s bedside, her hand cold in mine. She hadn’t stirred since the ritual. There was no flicker of her lashes, no whisper of her voice, no calling out my namenothing. Even her breathing was so fragile that it had panicked me at first, and I’d stayed by her side without sleepingI couldn’t let my nightmare come true.

I never wanted to come here one day and find she had stopped breathing. I don’t think I could survive that.

I wrung the cloth again, water dripping into the basin, and pressed it gently to her brow. Her skin still burned with fever. Every time a tremor ran through her, something inside me ached, as if it were tearing itself apart.

My thumb brushed her knuckles as I gazed at her deeply. Little wolfshould I kiss you so you’ll wake up?

Her lips parted faintly, but no sound came.

Just as I was watching closely to see if I imagined it, the door creaked open. Kathleen slipped in, balancing a tray of broth and bread.

She froze when she saw me hunched beside Scarlett, but her eyes softened, even as her tone was sharp. My Goddess, Lucien. You’ve been here for four days already. Go out, touch some grass and see the world!

I looked at my sister. It’s fine. I don’t want to leave her. I want to be the first person she sees when she wakes up.

I know how much you treasure Scarlett. But if you carry on like this, you’ll drop dead too! You haven’t stepped out of this room once. If I didn’t know you were the one wiping Scarlett’s body with warm, clean water and bathing yourself, you would stink right now! Look at your beard, you haven’t even shaved!Kathleen frowned at me.

I let out a heavy sigh and shook my head. Take care of the papers and the pack for me while I guard her. I can’t be sure that damned mistress of Alexander won’t try something while Scarlett’s vulnerable. I can’t risk it. and I can’t trust anyone else to watch her. It’s better I do it myself.

Kathleen set the tray down on the table and let out a heavy sigh. I know that too, and I am worried about her. However, you’ve gone four days on nothing but stubbornness. That’s not strength, Lucien; that’s suicide.”

Et avm’t die don’t wish for it.I said calmly.

Kathleen rolled her eyes. I know, but you should eat. I wouldn’t be surprised if you suddenly dropped dead here one day if you keep this up.

I won’t. I know my limits. My grip tightened on Scarlett’s hand. I want to always be herefor her, Kathleen. I want to give everything I have to her, including myself. I want her.”

Her lips pressed into a thin line. For a moment, I thought she’d argue again. Instead, she drew a shaky breath and lowered her voice.

You’ve fallen deeply, brother. I’m glad you’re taking care of her, but make sure you take good care of yourself tooyou’re my only family left.

I paused and looked at her reddened eyes. I’d worried her too much, but I did know my limits. I didn’t want to die, especially with Scarlett here waiting for me. And, of course, my sister still hadn’t found her mate. She was too young to handle life alone.

I won’t. Don’t worry about me.”

Kathleen sneered. As if I want to worry about you. I’m more worried about Sca.”

Hearing her mention Scarlett, my eyes softened.

e I could speak, Kathleen continued. Damn, you’ve fallen hard, brother. I’ve never seen anyone love like not even when our parents were alive. Not even those Alphas I’ve met. No one loves their Luna as much

love Scarlett and I’m glad to see it.

I let out a soft chuckle as I gently stroked Scarlett’s cheek. She deserves more love in this world. I’ll make sure I give her more.

Kathleen nodded. Fine, fine. I can’t convince Scarlett, how could I convince you? Such a pair of troublesome lovebirds. Eat the food I brought. I worked hard making itif you don’t eat it, I’ll kill you.

She raised her knuckles in mock threat.

I laughed, looking at her. What about you? When are you going to find your mate?

I saw her pause and sigh heavily. I’ve decided not to find a mate anymore. It’s too scary. What if he does the same thing Alexander did to Scarlett? I’m not as strong as Scarlett, who was brave enough to propose that bill to dissolve the bonds even though many wolves disagreed. I’m a happygolucky woman; I don’t want to be tied to a bond that doesn’t serve me.”

I nodded in agreement. It’s good that you value yourself. After all, if anyone dares to hurt you, I’ll make them disappearcleanly, so your reputation won’t suffer.

Kathleen laughed. You say the same thing about Scarlett. Anyway, if I end up alone, I’ll just live with the two of you.

My face fell. No way! Scarlett will end up sticking to you more than to me!

Then hurry up and give me a nephew to play with!she said, waving her hand as she hurried out of the room, leaving me helpless.

Chapter 85

I looked at Scarlett’s sleeping face, unable to keep the softness from my gaze. Did you hear that Karbleen says we should hurry up and give her a nephew, so you should hurry up and wake up?

I leaned closer to her.

Little wolf,I murmured, brushing damp strands of hair from her forehead, I don’t know if you can hear me. But I’ll keep talking until you do. Because silence is worse than anything

I swallowed hard. Do you remember? The night after the war, when everyone looked at you like you weren’t supposed to stand. When they doubted you, spat your name, called you unworthy? You didn’t break. You stood there with blood on your hands and your chin high. That’s when I knew?

My voice cracked. I pressed my forehead against her hand, clinging to it as if it were the only anchor I had left. That’s when I knew I’d follow you anywhere. That I’d burn everything I have, even this pack, if it meant keeping you.

The chamber swallowed my words, but I kept speaking.

You’ve always been afraid to look at me that way. I see it. I feel it. And I didn’t push, because you’ve carried chains heavier than anyone deserves. But, little wolfMy throat ached. If you come back to me, I swear I’l never let anyone bind you again. Not Alexander. Not the Council. Not even me.

I lifted my head, searching her face for any sign. Her eyelashes stayed still, her lips unmoving. Only the faintest tremor in her hand reminded me she was still here, still fighting.

I sat back, exhaustion clawing at me, but I didn’t close my eyes. I wanted to be the first she saw if she woke up.

The hours bled together. Daylight filtered in and out of the curtains, but I stayed fixed at Scarlett’s side, counting every shallow breath.

I let the Beta handle the patrols, warriors, council messages. Nothing mattered more than this bed, this room, this woman.

Sometimes Kathleen sat with me, dozing lightly in the chair before slipping away. But when the silence grew deep, I spoke again.
