Chapter 9
My mouth suddenly flooded with bitter saliva.
My stomach twisted in knots.
I figured this was going to be a complete waste of time.
I took a few steps back. The server glanced behind me and bowed respectfully.
“Director Blackwood!”
I turned around and saw the billionaire who’d shown up at my place the night before.
He looked radiant, clearly in great spirits.
“You made it. Let’s talk.”
There were private rooms next to the banquet hall.
Shortly after Darius’s dad went in, Lydia appeared too, arms crossed, acting all coquettish.
“Uncle Blackwood-”
“Such a small matter-did you really need to handle this personally? You could’ve left it to me~”
Director Blackwood smiled faintly, his gaze shifting to me.
“The price I offered-you’re not satisfied?”
Just like Lydia, he looked me up and down with that appraising, calculating stare.
The subtext seemed to be: You’re worth forty grand tops-what’s with the attitude?
I bristled.
“Is that how little you think of ordinary people’s love?”
Director Blackwood paused for a second, then laughed softly.
“Heh, what else would I think?”
“You know why great romances only happen in wealthy families? Love itself is a luxury item.”
“Look at history-why do rich men abandon their poor wives once they make it? Because marrying poor wasn’t their choice-they just had no options.”

Chapter 9
“When people are starving, they’ll eat tree bark to survive. You can’t call tree bark their true love, can you?”
“Now Darius has choices.”
Director Blackwood raised his finger and drew an invisible line in the air between me and Lydia.
“If you were him, who would you pick?”
“Young lady, think long-term. Whatever feelings Darius has left for you? That’s just nostalgia. Once he’s exposed to real socialites, how could he possibly still want you?”
“Rather than growing to hate each other later when he dumps you anyway, why not step back gracefully now? At least preserve some goodwill. Maybe Darius will help you out someday.”
Director Blackwood stood up.
“Alright, Lydia, give her the check. Don’t want people saying we’re bullies.”
After Director Blackwood left, Lydia held the check between two fingers and laid into me again.
The gist: Stop dreaming about being Cinderella marrying Prince Charming-even Cinderella was an earl’s daughter. What was
I?
All those soap operas had rotted my brain. How could I possibly compete with her?
She wasn’t just rich-she was Ivy League educated, spoke three languages, had been painting since age four, played piano at a professional level, and held art exhibitions in high school. She crushed me in every category.
And I’d seen how intimate Darius was with her just now, right?
“Unless he’s blind or stupid, he’d never choose you. Stop humiliating yourself-take the money and get lost.”
Their words were insulting as hell.
But I had to admit, even I thought they had a point.
How much could Darius really love me? How solid could our relationship actually be?
It had been two full days since he’d gone back to the Blackwood family, and he hadn’t contacted me once.
I guess that’s all I meant to him.
Breaking up was inevitable.
I couldn’t lose both the guy and the money.
Getting humiliated for nothing wasn’t an option.
Feeling defeated, I took the check with a blank expression.
“I’ll break up with Darius, but I need to tell him face-to-face.”
