Chapter 5
1 jerked my head up.
It was my adoptive brother-hadn’t seen him in years.
Dad never wanted me working at the station. He wanted me home, helping run the family business. But I went behind his back and took the job anyway.
He was so pissed he basically cut me off.
Which meant I barely saw my brother anymore either.
“Dorian, please-check on Grandma…”
My voice cracked completely, thick with tears.
Seeing the scratches all over my face, my clothes torn and disheveled, his expression went dark as thunder. He immediately stripped off his jacket and wrapped it around me.
Scooped me up like I weighed nothing.
Without even looking back, he barked orders:
“Get Grandma to the hospital. NOW.”
His guys moved fast-loading Grandma onto a stretcher, even hauling Marcus’s beaten ass into the ambulance.
Then he turned back to me, his voice going soft:
“You’re coming with me to the hospital too.”
But when he looked at the crowd around us, his face went ice-cold, eyes deadly:
“Don’t worry. Every single person who hurt you is going to pay.”
My heart ached, still terrified about Grandma, but I nodded.
Just as I was about to get in the car, someone grabbed my wrist.
Lucifer’s eyes were glued to me, his voice scary-cold:
“What’s your relationship with the CEO of Phoenix Group?”
“Don’t tell me it’s true-you really do trade your body for interviews?”

He actually stepped back like I was contaminated, disgust flickering in his eyes.
I let out a bitter laugh:
“Lucifer Sinclair, what gives you the right to question me?”
“What are we to each other, anyway?”
Lucifer froze. He glanced around at everyone whispering, trying to reason with me:
“I told you-we’ll talk about everything at home! You’re the one being unreasonable!”
I pointed at Grandma’s stretcher, my laugh turning vicious:
“Venomia spread lies about me right to my face and you said nothing. My grandmother almost died and you didn’t give a shit. And you’re calling ME unreasonable?”
Lucifer’s face flushed with embarrassment. His words came faster, throwing accusations at me:
“Isn’t this your fault? If you hadn’t scratched the car and refused to apologize, none of this would’ve happened! You turned nothing into a fucking circus, then brought in some old lady to fake an injury!”
He paused, putting on this disappointed act:
“Eight years I’ve known you, and today I’m finally seeing who you really are.”
Looking at his self-righteous face made me sick.
I really was blind as a bat.
Back when his company couldn’t get investors, I secretly went to Dad’s contacts, begging everyone I knew to help him get funding.
I was supposed to focus on current events, but I switched to financial journalism for him.
Networked with every big shot I could find, learned their business, compiled reports and sent him everything.
All so he could reach the top and finally claim me publicly.
I planned for the beginning but never saw the ending coming.
When he finally made it, he’d rather do my worst enemy’s interview and pretend to be her boyfriend than acknowledge our relationship.
