Chapter 1
The day we were supposed to get our marriage license, my boyfriend showed up with a soda can tab instead of the diamond ring he’d promised.
I dumped him on the spot.
He began to frantically wave some receipt around.
“Babe, I just forgot the ring at home. Give me twenty minutes and I’ll come back-”
I watched someone sprint toward us and cut him off:
“Save it. Your little shadow already brought it.”
The girl stumbled up to us, tears streaming, with a huge diamond stuck tight on her swollen finger.
She was practically sobbing:
“Jasper, I was just trying it on to check the size for Liv, but now it won’t come off…”
Jasper’s face went dark:
“Who told you to touch it? That’s Liv’s ring!”
He started twisting it like a maniac, but the thing wouldn’t budge.
I crossed my arms and watched this trainwreck, then laughed.
“Easy fix. Just cut the finger off.”
Jasper froze for a second, then completely lost it on the girl:
“Madison, look what you’ve done! If I don’t get that ring back, you’re fired tomorrow!”
Madison Clarke’s eyes instantly filled with tears.
But instead of begging Jasper for mercy, she turned to me and started bowing like crazy.
Her dramatic display had everyone in the courthouse lobby staring.
“Liv, I’m so sorry! Please don’t fire me-I can’t lose this job!”
The second she finished talking, she started yanking at her finger, twisting it at angles that made everyone wince.
Jasper Reed’s face twisted up and he grabbed her wrist:
“Are you insane? Liv wasn’t being serious!”
He pulled out his keys and started dragging Madison toward the exit:
“Get in the car. We’re going to the hospital right now and getting that ring off!”

Chapter 1
The entire time, Jasper didn’t even glance my way.
Standing there in the courthouse, I could feel people shooting me those pitying looks.
But I was totally calm.
After all, I’d watched this same drama play out about a hundred times before.
Everything changed at that party a year ago.
I was about to announce our engagement.
Then this server “accidentally” dropped a champagne bottle.
She stumbled toward Jasper, her eyes lighting up with the joy of a long-awaited reunion.
“Jasper, oh my God, it’s been forever! You’re getting engaged?”
Way too familiar for a stranger.
I’d been with Jasper for five years and knew everyone in his circle.
Never seen this girl before.
Jasper, who was usually super chill, completely lost his shit in front of everyone.
“Madison Clarke, do you have any idea that bottle cost six figures?”
Madison went ghost-white, just standing there looking like a deer in headlights while Jasper tore into her.
Being polite, I let it slide and had them bring another bottle.
Later, Jasper gave me the whole sob story.
Madison was just some neighbor kid who used to follow him around. They lost touch when she moved away.
