Chapter 1
After my brother Tyler and I both got our study abroad visas approved, I figured I’d hop online and do some research about student life overseas.
That’s when I came across this absolutely unhinged Reddit post.
[Both my kids got into universities abroad, but I only want my son to go.]
[My husband and I want to keep our daughter home to settle down and take care of us. What’s the best way to sabotage this without looking like the bad guys?]
The top comment was straight-up diabolical:
[Easy fix – wait till she gets everything processed, then ‘accidentally’ throw her passport in the washing machine lol]
[Once that thing gets shredded, she’s screwed. Has to start the whole visa process over from scratch. Study abroad? More like study at home.]
[Pro tip: blame HER for leaving it out. She can’t even be mad at you, and she’ll be too defeated to fight back. Perfect daughter training!]
I was seeing red. Like, who the fuck thinks like this?
What kind of psycho parents still pull this medieval bullshit in 2025?
But literally the next second, my mom Karen – who’s always going on about being such a supportive “girl mom” – strolled into my room carrying a laundry basket, all sweet smiles.
“Hey honey! Your dad’s cutting up some of that pineapple you love. I’ll just pop these dirty clothes in the wash while you’re gone – such a mess in here!”
Oh wait, looks like I’m the unlucky one here – unlucky for YOU, that is.
Because watching your precious son cry while I succeed with your own cash?
PRICELESS.
I froze for a second, but quickly shook my head.
Get it together, Madison. Don’t be paranoid.
Those Reddit posts are probably just rage bait for clicks anyway. There’s no way in hell my mom Karen would actually post shit like that, right?
So I forced a smile. “Mom, you don’t need to do that. You’ve been teaching me to be independent since I was little I’m litera

an adult now. I can handle my own laundry.”
But Karen completely ignored me, already fussing around my perfectly organized desk like she was Marie Kondo or
something.
“Honey, once you’re abroad, you’ll have to do everything yourself. Mommy just wants to spoil you a little while she still can.”
“Let me help you with whatever I can before you leave, okay?”
“Now go grab that fruit before Tyler devours it all. Your dad specifically cut those pineapple for you.”
Even though Karen sounded super sincere, that fucking Reddit post kept flashing in my mind.
But I didn’t push back. I just played dumb and headed for the door.
The second I stepped out, Karen immediately went for my desk drawer and quietly tossed my passport into the laundry
basket.
My brain was racing, I was internally screaming, but I spun around and grabbed my passport out of the dirty clothes. “Mom, what the hell? You just threw my passport in there.”
“This passport already has my visa approved. If it gets washed, it’ll be totally ruined and I’ll have to restart the entire application process.”
Karen’s face went white, but instead of apologizing, she had the audacity to frown at me. “Madison, you really need to stop leaving important stuff lying around everywhere. If I hadn’t come in here to clean up, you probably would’ve lost it yourself.”
