“I-Is that… Really okay?” It took Bernard a long moment before he finally found his voice again.
His words came out shaky, betraying his emotions.
Stella gave him a calm, almost detached glance. “Do you have a dollar?”
“Huh?” Bernard was taken aback.
Sebastian, knowing precisely what she meant, added coolly, “A dollar. Coin or bill, doesn’t matter.”
“Yes, yes, I have one,” Bernard replied quickly.
The guard was the first to recover. He pulled a dollar coin from his pocket and started to hand it to Stella, but she didn’t even look up. “Let him give it to me himself.”
That’s just her way when it comes to treating people.
Bernard didn’t hesitate. He took the coin from the guard, his old hand shaking.
He held it out to her.
Stella took it slowly.
“Deal,” she said.
The guards just stared, totally at a loss for words.
“John, go grab the set of needles Paul gave me,” Stella said, twirling the coin with a little flourish, her eyes wandering lazily over to Salem, not really caring.
John didn’t hesitate. He spun around and grabbed the needles in no time.
Stella flipped open the needle case.
On the other side, Salem looked jumpy, ready to run for it.
“If you even think about moving, I’ll break your legs,” Stella’s icy, intimidating voice rang out from across the
room.
Salem nearly jumped out of his skin.
Instinctively, he scrambled to hide behind Bernard.
Bernard was speechless.
Stella gave a lazy, mocking laugh. “Doesn’t matter who’s got your back. It’s useless!”
Salem shot her a look of pure annoyance.

He blinked.
Then he darted over to hide behind Sebastian instead.
Stella froze.
Fabian let out a snort. He just couldn’t hold back his laughter.

Fabian thought, ‘Call him clueless, but somehow he always manages to sniff out the one guy who can bail him out of trouble.’
The next second, Stella shot him a chilling look.
It gave Fabian the creeps.
Five silver needles, as thin as a hair, suddenly appeared between her fingers.
Fabian was stunned.
They were all stunned.
‘Damn, she’s terrifying!’ Fabian thought to himself.
Stella took a deep breath, her expression darkening as the whole atmosphere in the room instantly changed.
She called softly, “Sebastian.”
She smiled at him.
“Yeah,” Sebastian replied.
He took his sweet time rolling up his sleeves, and Salem just blinked, totally lost. The next thing he knew, Sebastian had him locked down on the couch.
Salem was left shell-shocked.
John just stood there, hands behind his back.
‘It’s time,’ he braced himself.
Everyone heard a faint ‘ding’ as quiet as a mosquito’s hum. The silver needles, thin as a strand of hair, stood upright in Stella’s hand, seemingly suspended in midair, leaving everyone absolutely gobsmacked.
Before anyone could even blink, those five needles pierced into Salem’s scalp in a blur, almost too fast to see. Instantly, Salem’s face broke out in a cold sweat.
“Hey!” he chirped.
He looked like he was about to freak out again.
But what happened next blew everyone’s minds.

Right in the center of Salem’s scalp, a rusty, blackened, thread-like object slowly started to rise. But when everyone stared hard. “Wait, is that a steel needle?!”
Bernard’s guard couldn’t help but shout out in shock.
“Thread? What thread?’ he thought, dumbfounded.
He thought, “That’s a freaking steel needle!’
Bernard slowly clenched his aged hands, his usually stern face now clouded with barely contained rage, his heart pounding in his throat.
As soon as the rusty, blackened steel needle was pulled out, Salem dropped like a stone.
Bernard shouted, “Salem!”
“All done,” Stella said calmly.
Everyone was stunned.
‘All done? Just like that?’ Everyone was left in utter disbelief.
“Young lady, what do you mean by ‘all done’?” Bernard asked, his usual iron-willed face now clouded with
confusion.
“Exactly what I said,” Stella replied, glancing at the rusty steel needle she’d just pulled out, her lips curling in disdain. She thought, ‘People are still using this kind of garbage? Unbelievable!
‘If I ever catch someone using this crap again, I’ll personally wring their neck, she thought, her gaze icy and dangerous.
“So what about Salem? How is he now?” Bernard asked, his voice trembling as he looked at his son lying on the couch, gaunt and lifeless. For the first time in over a decade, Bernard actually felt a glimmer of hope.
Stella raised an eyebrow at him. “He’s been worn out for over ten years, finally gets a chance to sleep well, and you’re not gonna let him catch up on some rest?”
“Of course! Of course! Of course!” Bernard blurted out, his excitement practically bursting through.
Stella twirled the steel needle between her fingers. “This is called the Ghost Gate Needle, also known as the Soul-Settling Needle. Stick it in the Vital Gate, and it drives you mad. But you stay painfully aware the whole
time,”
“What do you mean, ‘mad but aware’?” the guard couldn’t help but ask.
Stella replied, “His mind stays clear, but he can’t control what he does. He knows he’s making life hell for everyone, and his conscience tears him up inside. The despair keeps piling up until he can’t take it anymore and ends it himself.”
“Those monsters!” Bernard roared, his fury barely contained.

‘How could anyone be so cruel back then?’ he fumed, his hands shaking.
Stella’s phone chimed.
She shot it a lazy glance. It was from Cassie.
Cassie: [I’m heading back to the Porter family tomorrow!]
She even tacked on a sassy Persian cat emoji at the end.
Stella replied with a lazy [Got it], then tossed her phone right back where she’d grabbed it from.
‘Guess it’s time to send my gift,’ she thought to herself.
Bernard asked, “So when will Salem wake up? He doesn’t look like he’s sleeping easily…”
On the couch, Salem’s brows were tightly furrowed, his head twitching restlessly.
Stella glanced over at him with a thoughtful look.
She looked like she was mulling it over.
She looked like she was really thinking it over.

“Wait a sec,” Stella said in her usual laid-back way, sauntering over to Salem. Everyone heard two sharp snaps, and in an instant, Salem, who’d been tossing and turning, looked totally calm, as if he were finally getting
some real rest.
Stella looked up. “He’s good now.”
‘Trust me, he’ll sleep like a baby till sunrise,’ she thought to herself.
Bernard was speechless.
The guards just stared, totally at a loss for words.
Then they were stunned.
Her logic was on a whole other level. They couldn’t keep up.
The room was deadly quiet.
Only Lucas tilted his head, looking adorably innocent.
Going the extra mile, he even helped Salem fold his hands neatly over his chest.
The punks were speechless.
Now he looked downright serene.
“It’s too late to head out now. You guys should stay here for the night. There are rooms upstairs. I’ll have
