“Merry Christmas Eve, my loves,” I say as I hand out gifts–three for Milo and three for Scar. Scar gives Milo one gift and hands one to me, then places two more between us. She explains that she bought each of us an individual present along with one gift meant for the two of us to share. Milo gives Scar and me two gifts each, and together we place a single gift in front of Scar that we bought jointly for
her..
We start by opening our individual gifts. I give Scar a beautiful jade bracelet and matching necklace, along with a pair of diamond earrings and three toe rings. She once mentioned that she wanted to try toe rings, and since she has the cutest little feet, I know instantly that I have to buy them when I see them. I give Milo a sleek new wallet that he had been wanting, complete with his initials engraved inside. I also get him a fresh set of beard trimmers and a pair of earbuds.
The knives Scar gives me are stunning, and seeing my name etched into the handles makes them even more special. Milo gives me three new ties with matching tie clips and a gorgeous gold–and- diamond money clip. He gives Scar a diamond anklet and a dark blue Miss Dior flap bag. Then she opens the gift Milo and I bought together for her–a plush, incredibly soft six–foot blanket along with fluffy socks. She laughs happil Chapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading! lanket. We are all sitting on makeshift beds arranged on the 11001.
Milo and I laugh as we read the sayings written on the whiskey glasses. Before we can open the final
present, Scar stops us.
“Technically, these are for me,” she says with a smile. “But I bought them with both of you in mind.”
After that mysterious explanation, Milo and I eagerly tear into the last gift.
Inside the box are ten wide–band lace thongs, each a different color. At first, I am confused. Then we each pick one up, and our confusion quickly turns into matching smiles. On the back of each thong, printed across the wide band, are the letters M&J spelled out in faux diamonds.
She is absolutely incredible. I lean forward, kiss her, and then kiss Milo.
“This is honestly the best Christmas I’ve ever had,” I say, feeling completely fulfilled. “I’m with the two people I love most, we’re going to build an amazing house and homestead in Colorado, we’ll also have a smaller home in Spain, and I’m starting an entirely new chapter in my life. Right now, it doesn’t feel like life could get any better.”
“Let’s make sure we remember how incredible the soups were tonight. The loaded baked potato soup, the chicken noodle, and the Zuppa Toscana. This is officially becoming a family ritual now. Christmas Eve means soup from now on, along with those amazing spicy crackers you made. I’m really grateful

that you’re part of my life,” Milo says as he rubs his stomach.
“You only care about me because I cook for you,” Scar says with a pout, though her eyes sparkle
playfully.
“Well, that–and that sweet pussy and tight ass,” Milo jokes.
She shrieks and throws herself at him. He bursts out laughing as he catches her, and I decide to jump
in too. The three of us collapse together, tickling her until she completely loses it.
“Okay, I surrender, I surrender. You’re going to make me wet my pants,” she says between giggles.
The alarm suddenly blares. Milo and I let out matching sighs. We both stand up and lift her into our arms, Milo holding her from the front while I support her from behind.
“We love you. We’ll be back before you know it,” he says. He kisses her, then I lean in and kiss her as
well.
“Love you, Princess. Sorry we’re leaving you with all this mess.‘
“I love you both too. Don’t worry about it. Go. Come back to me,” she replies.
We leave her behind and start suiting up. I climb into the back with Milo, and the truck takes off. All at
once, I feel an intense sense of certainty about our choice to stop being firefighters. I glance at Milo,
and he’s already watching me.
“We made the right call,” he says. I nod in agreement. Neither of us wants to be separated from her
anymore. We don’t want the constant rush, danger, and adrenaline. Now, we both have someone to
live for beyond just each other. Yes, we still have our families–our siblings, Milo’s parents, and my
mom–but Scar is our world. And we are hers. Our lives revolve around her now.
The truck screeches to a stop in front of a two–story house that’s completely engulfed in flames. The
Chief starts shouting commands, and Milo and I move immediately.
Our assignment is to circle around to the back of the house and assess it, and if possible, enter and
search for survivors, while the rest of the crew handles the blaze from the front.
We reach the back with Magnus and Silas. Smoke pours out, but there are no visible flames. The glass
in the back door is shattered, along with two rear windows. Milo kicks the door open and we head inside. Smoke fills every inch of the space. We shout for anyone who might be trapped. The kitchen turns up empty, so we advance toward the front of the house. Flames crawl up the dining room walls. I
spray foam, trying to suppress the fire.
Magnus sprays alongside me while Milo and Silas push ahead. Once the flames are under control, Magnus and I follow after them. I hear shouting coming from upstairs. I aim foam at the fire along the

staircase and coat the walls as we go. Milo sprays ahead of us. I feel water hitting from the front of the house and let out a breath of relief. The heat is brutal. We reach the second floor and stop in front of a closed door. Milo calls out to anyone inside. The door flies open and two children bolt out.
Milo grabs an eight–year–old boy and a five–year–old girl, lifting them effortlessly. He clears them from danger and rushes downstairs, exiting through the back. Magnus, Silas, and I continue forward. We search every room upstairs. The only living thing we find is a terrified cat hiding in a closet. By now, the fire is nearly extinguished. Water and foam coat everything. I can’t stop wondering where the kids‘ parents are. It’s Christmas Eve, for God’s sake. Silas carries the cat as we slowly make our way back downstairs and out of the house.
I walk over to Milo, who’s standing beside Brenna while she examines the kids.
“The boy says their mom is at work. There’s no dad–he left years ago. He told me they were upstairs watching TV in his room. He noticed the lights flickering but didn’t understand why. He smelled something burning but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. He thought it must be outside somewhere. My guess is faulty wiring in the walls. Something probably shorted out or exposed wiring ignited the insulation. Not sure. Not my department. Poor kids,” Milo says.
The Chief steps up and hands each child a candy cane. They smile and thank him.
“Wow, look at you, you big softie,” I say.
“It’s Christmas Eve. I always keep these on me during the holidays,” he replies.
I laugh quietly. He really is a good man. Those kids–and their mom–having to work on Christmas Eve. This night turns into a pretty awful Christmas Eve for at least one family.
