I finish tidying up the chaos we created from all the torn wrapping paper, and once that is done, I decide to prepare the cinnamon rolls, placing them into pans so they are ready to bake in the morning. Doing it now means breakfast will be much quicker to put together when Christmas morning arrives.

Although we do a Secret Santa exchange, I still purchase custommade keychains for everyone, each

one engraved with a small phrase that fits the person it belongs to. Brenna, for instance, constantly

says, Screw you guys, I’m going home, whenever someone messes with her. She grows up watching

a lot of South Park and always loves those kinds of catchphrases. Magnus’s keychain reads, I look

so hot, because he is forever admiring himself in any reflective surface he passes and muttering that

exact line.

I wrap each keychain in a tiny bChapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading! Charlie Brownstyle Christmas tree tucked into the corner of the common area. That way, every person has at least two presents waiting for them to openone from their assigned Secret Santa and another one from me. I know I am

going to miss every single one of them, but at the same time, I feel incredibly grateful that I get to live fully and happily alongside Jace and Milo.

Outside, night has already settled in, while inside the station every light is glowing brightly. As I am finishing up the final cinnamon roll, I hear an unexpected sound coming from the open bay.

I wipe my hands clean and make my way down the hallway, stepping out into the larger area. No one should be out there at this hour. Maybe investigating the noise is some stupid horrormovie instinct, but I feel confident that I am not in danger. My security team is somewhere nearby.

I do not see anyone at first. The space feels open and empty. I step farther out into the driveway and notice a shadow across the street, along with another figure sitting inside a car parked farther down. I raise my hand in a wave and think they might appreciate having some coffee. Even though I am supposed to pretend they are not there, bringing them coffee feels like something I cannot ignore. I head back inside and return to the kitchen.

While the coffee is brewing, the lights in both the hallway and the kitchen suddenly shut off. A chill runs up my spine as I hear the sound of movement nearby. Before I can react or turn around, a hand clamps firmly over my mouth and nose. A sharp, bitter smell hits me immediately, and I realize there is a cloth pressed against my face along with the hand. I fight back and attempt to use the selfdefense

techniques I know, but nothing I try has any effect. Weakness spreads through my body, dizziness

overtakes me, and then everything goes black.

Sloane’s POV

I watch him as he creeps behind the tree, carefully observing the station. I question why his attention is focused on the fire station in the first place. Ever since I arrive here from Montana, I barely sleep, staying constantly alert while tracking Brennan. I follow him in a cab all the way to a dilapidated- looking motel.

What kind of place is this?I ask Marco, the cab driver.

It’s a weekly rental,he explains. People pay by the week for rooms.

That works perfectly. Pull up to the office and wait here for me,I tell him.

I step out of the cab and head inside the office. A young man stands behind the counter, and his eyes grow wide the moment he sees me. I flash my most inviting smile and push my chest forward deliberately. He is instantly transfixed.

Hey there, handsome,I say smoothly. Do you have any rooms available?

Yes,he replies quickly. Would you prefer the first floor or the second?

sleeper.”

They are, unfortunately,he admits, but we do sell earplugs.

I’ll take a pair,I say, even though I have no intention of using them. I just need to be sure I can hear

Brennan whenever he comes or goes.

Once I have the key in hand, I give the kid a wink and leave the office, climbing back into the cab.

Marco,I say, I need to get myself a car. Do you know anywhere I could buy one cheaply?

My brother owns a used car lot,” he tells me.

You’re a lifesaver,I reply. Please take me there.

He drives me to his brother’s dealership and speaks to him in a language I do not recognize. I have , already paid the cab fare earlier, since Marco explains that he is an independent driver who rents his

cab and pays a daily fee. I also hand him a fivehundreddollar tip for the day.

He thanks me repeatedly before leaving me with his brother. The brother takes care of everything and sets me up with a plain, unremarkable vehicle. He mentions that Marco told him I am trying to catch

my cheating, worthless husband. He gives me a look I recognize immediatelyhe wants me. I make it clear that I will take care of him if he takes care of me. I go down on him, knocking five thousand dollars off the price of the car, and then I let him bend me over his desk in the office. He is not terrible.

He even throws in a set of brandnew tires.

For the next two days, I follow Brennan as he walks from the station to another building and back again. I have no idea how he fails to notice that my car is always nearby, though I do catch him glancing around frequently. I wonder if he senses that I am watching him.

On the very first day, I spot her with two incredibly attractive men. Scar looks amazing. I feel a flicker of jealousy. She is no longer all hard muscle and sharp lines; instead, she is fuller and softer in exactly the right places. She still looks strong and healthy, but now she is curvier and undeniably sexy. Before, she was just cute. The two men at her side clearly cannot keep their hands off her. Is this the relationship I overhear Brennan and his mother arguing about? Lucky bitch. I bet I could steal them away from her. I glance from Brennan to the two men again. How does she manage to make men like that adore her so completely? NoI refocus. I have come too far to trap Brennan. He is the one I want,

and I am not backing out now.

I sit there watching all of them browse through stores while Brennan keeps his eyes on them, and then my attention shifts to her standing with two attractive women. After that, I watch her return to the men, and together they head toward a bank. Sitting in the car for hours has completely worn me out, and hunger starts setting in. I make the choice to walk away from Brennan for the rest of the day. Much later, I hear him moving around in his room. I can also hear the anger in his voice. He is completely unraveling. He needs me to step in and soothe him. I almost go to him, but I stop myself at the last second. I’m not prepared to let him know I’m here yet.

On the second day, I feel his absence. I must sleep through the moment he leaves that morning. I take advantage of the quiet time and go out shopping for myself, picking up basic bathroom necessities along with some fresh clothes and new shoes.

This morning, I hear him shifting around early. I jump out of bed and get myself ready as fast as possible. I hear him head out, crack my door open, and spot him walking away on foot. I wait briefly

before leaving myself and climbing into my car.

Now I’m sitting in my black sedan, watching Brennan linger around the fire station for hours on end. I leave briefly to grab snacks and water, then return to find him standing exactly where he was before. I can’t help but wonder what could possibly be so captivating about that fire station.
