Is this where Scar works? Shit, it has to be. There’s no other reason he would stay here all day. I watch

him wander into the open bay, shocked that no one tells him to leave. He eventually makes his way

back to the tree. He keeps glancing in my direction. Does he notice me? I sink lower in my seat, praying he doesn’t. I can’t tear my eyes away from him. He looks incredible. I love him deeply. He has

to be my husband.

Suddenly, a fire engine, an ambulance, and a large red truck rush past my car. I notice movement to my right and see two men stand up from a table outside a café. I don’t register them at first because all my focus is on Brennan. They are extremely attractive. This city is full of fineass men.

One of them catches my eye and looks directly at me. I smile and give a small wave. He responds with a nod. I grab my phone and pretend to be on a call while continuing to watch him. His gaze shifts down the street behind me, just like the other man’s. I glance back at Brennan.

His attention remains locked on the station. I look again and take a slow breath. There she isso she really does work there. That means he’s been stalking her just like I’ve been stalking him. I laugh quietly at the irony. She waves in my direction and walks back inside the station. What the fuck? I glance back toward the men at the café, wondering if the wave is meant for them. They’re still focused

behind me, eyes on their phones.

God, they are unbelievably hot. I look back toward Brennan and realize he’s gone. Where did he disappear to? It’s much darker now, but I can still make out his shape earlier before I get distracted by the man at the café. I squint through my windshield, scanning the area. A bit farther down from where Brennan was standing, I notice someone running across the street, but I ignore it. The person is much taller than Brennan, so I know it isn’t him. Damn it, where did he go?

Ugh, my focus slips for only a moment. I glance back at the men at the café again. They’re both seated now, completely absorbed in their phones. Those ridiculously handsome men are throwing me off. I decide I might as well head back to the motel.

I start the car and slowly drive past the spot where Brennan had been standing. I peer out my window carefully. I stop the car and step outside. Something is lying on the ground near the bushes. I walk closer, and then I scream for help. Brennan is sprawled on the ground, partially hidden beneath a bush. Blood runs down his face from a deep gash on the left side of his forehead. The men from the café

sprint toward us.

Please help him. He’s my boyfriend.

I feel someone watching me. I can’t see who it is. Every time I turn around, no one is there. Then I finally catch sight of my wife. She’s shopping with those two assholes. She laughs with them, they hold hands, and they kiss. I can’t believe she’s doing all of this openly with both of them. Later, she meets up with a striking redhead and a beautiful blonde. I trail them for a while. She looks like she’s spending an insane amount of money. I start wondering where she even gets her cash. There’s no way a firefighter cook can afford to shop like that.

I catch sight of her again once her shift at the fire station ends. She heads out with a brunette, and together they go to the same shops where Scar was shopping the day before. She emerges carrying several bags filled with wrapped presents. The brunette walks her all the way back to the fire station, and Scar hands her an envelope before they part. I hear her tell the girl to pass along a kiss to Gavin on her behalf. The brunette laughs and says something crude about a blow job. Women in Florida are

unbelievably outrageous.

I can’t understand why Scar returns to the fire station. I wait nearby for two full hours, but she never comes back outside. Eventually, I abandon my hiding place and go get something to eat. Even then, I still feel like someone is watching me. That sensation has followed me ever since I returned from

Montana. It is beginning to seriously irritate me.

1 head back toward the station. I move closer to the firehouse, trying to see if Scar is anywhere around. Nobody notices me as I step into the open bay. I peer around one of the support pillars and see that everyone is seated and eating together. They are having soup, along with what looks like whole loaves of bread. I spot her there, laughing, sitting right between the men she calls her boyfriends. It is Christmas Eve. Maybe she plans to stay there overnight.

I retreat again to my place behind the tree. I relieve myself and scan my surroundings as darkness starts to settle in. Squinting into the dim light, I notice two men sitting across the street outside a café. They hold coffee cups and keep staring toward the fire station. I wonder who they are and what

makes them so intent on watching the building.

The sky continues to darken. Fatigue starts weighing me down. The two men at the café still haven’t gone anywhere. Something about them makes me uneasy. Suddenly, alarms blare from inside the station. I watch as an ambulance and a firetruck pull out onto the street. A large truck follows right behind them. I see all of them race away down the road. The men across the street watch the vehicles

leave as well, and then I notice someone crouched low inside a parked car. This city is strange.

I turn my attention back to the fire station. I am certain she is alone inside now. Maybe I can walk over and talk to her. She would have to hear me out, wouldn’t she? I remain hidden in the shadows behind the tree. When I glance back at the men across the street, they are standing now, facing away from the

station.

I look toward the firehouse again, ready to step out from behind the tree, but I stop short. Scar is standing outside. Her gaze is fixed directly on me. I wonder if she realizes it’s me. She smiles and

waves, then gestures toward either the person in the car or the men who are now talking while one of them is on the phone. I watch her turn around and walk back into the station.

I am just about to step forward to cross the street when I hear footsteps behind me. I turn to look.

Oh hey,I say. My eyes widen. A burst of pain detonates in my head, and everything goes dark as I

collapse.
